From the article, retired chairman of UCLA's English Department, Tom Wortham states, "But Huck never realizes slavery is wrong." That statement is my fault. I lent Wortham my copy of Moby Books' illustrated, abridged version of Huck Finn for Young Readers, with only 15 chapters. So he obviously never got to chapter 31. My bad. I never thought that he'd go about blathering about the book without realizing I didn't give him the big-boy version. I just thought bad things like "all right, then, I'll go to hell" might just be too scary for him before bedtime. So mea maxima culpa. Saying that Huck doesn't realize slavery is wrong is like saying the Bible doesn't talk about Jesus. You could get that idea if you only read half of it, and didn't understand it too well, but the part you skim sometimes turns out to be sorta important. Alan Eliasen
