Also, past surveys found that the health status of
European and non-European descent Canadians
did not differ. In fact there was a “healthy immigrant
effect” whereby immigrants to Canada
showed superior health status to those born in
Canada. However, recent data from the National
Population Health Survey shows that the health
of non-European immigrants – especially recent
immigrants of colour – shows deterioration over
time as compared to Canadian-born residents and
European immigrants.
