Description

of the proposed

practicum

In January 2011, the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) will begin to play a greater role in supporting applied research and program evaluation, professional development and education, and knowledge exchange functions in public health. Such functions are key to evidence-informed public health practice and to the development of public health professionals across the province.

OAHPP has engaged health units, professional associations and provincial ministries in developing a program that meets the sector’s needs and advances health units’ ability to meet the Ontario Public Health Standards. A multi-step engagement process has included consultations, development and dissemination of a discussion paper providing an overview of the strategic considerations, principles and menu of potential program elements that would support the program functions, survey, focus group. The consultation will culminate in program design and implementation in late Fall, early Winter 2010/2011. More information about this initiative is available on the OAHPP website at
http://www.oahpp.ca/resources/projects/srke/index.html

This project offers students with an interest in program planning, implementation and evaluation to be actively involved in the final planning and roll-out of a new provincial program.

Working with the senior planner and director of external relations, student activities would include jurisdictional and comparative analyses, drafting of policies and support structures for advisory committees activities, preparing briefing materials for senior management, participating in internal and external planning and implementation teams, and engaging with OAHPP programmatic leadership, committee members, ministry partners to bring about the implementation.
Proposed educational objectives ·        Describe approaches to supporting knowledge exchange, applied research, program evaluation and professional development in public health as well as approaches to program planning and evaluation;
·
Discuss the applicability of different approaches (and advantages/disadvantages) to the transition underway and new program design;
·
Analyze how the program elements can contribute to meeting the needs of the public health units and practitioners;

·
Create a program logic model and an evaluation framework for one of the aspects of the new program design;
·
Develop and implement stakeholder engagement strategies and tools.
Proposed deliverable at the end of the practicum ·        A paper outlining a program logic model for one of the elements of the new design and a evaluation plan for this same element.
·
A presentation to the supervisor and senior management on student’s work.
