SDOH Members,
The Academy on Violence and Abuse (AVA) was founded in response to the US Institute of Medicine report entitled Confronting Chronic Neglect, the education and training of health processionals on family violence which observed that, while exposure to violence, abuse, maltreatment or neglect have serious and lasting adverse health effects, health professionals are, for the most part, inadequately trained to prevent, recognize or treat the consequences of this exposure.
April 14-16, 2011 AVA will host a conference featuring, among others, the lead authors of the Adverse Childhood Experiences studies (ACEs) which link a variety of childhood experiences with a host of chronic conditions. The conference will also feature Dr. Esme Fuller-Thomson who's work on the association between child abuse and adult disease has been published in the prestigious journal Cancer.
