The city of Toronto is hosting  an international student reception next month and would like to recognize the contributions that international students have made to the city. They are seeking nominations from all of the colleges and universities in the GTA for three Awards. The city's criteria and descriptions follow.


Toronto is the largest centre for international students in Canada. The city has benefitted in numerous ways by the presence of the 25,000 international students enrolled in various post-secondary academic institutions in Torontoregion. The city wants to celebrate the presence of international students and enhance their positive experience while they study and live here.

To fulfill this vision the City has joined with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), all of the City's Colleges and Universities, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) and Rogers Communications to formally recognize the contribution of this group by establishing the International Student Recognition Awards for 2011.  


Three outstanding international students will be recognized and presented with awards at the time of the International Students Reception on October 14, 2011. The recognition awards will consist of a Certificate from the City and Mayor’s office and a plaque.

The categories for these awards are as follows:

Award Category


Qualifications/Criteria


Community Services

·        A current student or a student who has graduated in the past one year
·        Significant contribution to community services while maintaining academic excellence
·        Examples of community services will include, but not restricted to: raising funds for disaster relief; drive to procure materials for food bank; outreach and help to communities in need.
·        Community services undertaken both in Canadaand abroad during the period of study are eligible for consideration.

Entrepreneurship

·        A current student or a student who has graduated in the past year
·        Contribution to entrepreneurial efforts or business development
·        Examples of entrepreneurial activities will include, but are not restricted to: such as setting up a new enterprise, a business; providing significant help in growing an existing business enterprise; activities that resulted in employment generation.
·        Entrepreneurial activities undertaken both in Canadaand abroad during the period of study are eligible for consideration.

High Achiever

·        An international student who came to study in one of the Greater Toronto Area's post-secondary institutions and then settled and worked here on completion of study.
·        Highly successful in a profession or business or other area
·        Examples of success will include, but not restricted to: reaching to top or near top level in a chosen profession; established or helped in establishing a medium or large enterprise; has become a publicly-known personality by virtue of devotion to particular cause.
