Clara Clemens owned a 1908 edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, signed by her before
her marriage to Ossip in 1909, heavily marked by Clara at an unknown date
(owned by me). Twain wrote a letter praising Whitman when expressing regrets
that he could not attend a birthday dinner in honor of Whitman (published in
CAMDEN'S COMPLIMENT TO WALT WHITMAN, 1889, pp. 64-5). I seem to recall that
Twain mentions Whitman in one of his autobiographical dictations, but I have
no citation --just a distinct memory.
