MUSIC & HEALING: MUSIC THERAPY AND END OF LIFE CARE

AN ONLINE WORKSHOP FOR HEALTHCARE & OTHER PROFESSIONALS

Course Objectives:

  • To gain a background in music therapy scopes of practice for older adults, specifically at end of life (with a focus on dementia care and cancer care), and an understanding of how music therapy intersects with interdisciplinary health care teams
  • To develop an understanding of the physiological, emotional and psychosocial impact of music therapy on older adults at end of life
  • To be able to identify and describe four key models of music therapy interventions used in this population
  • To gain a basic understanding of how music affects care spaces for older adults at end of life, and to gain a practical perspective on how to support music initiatives within your own health care setting

Week 1: An Overview of Music Therapy and End of Life Care with Older Adults

  • An historical perspective on music therapy and end of life care with older adults (What is music therapy? Where have we come from? Who are the pioneers in the field?)
  • An outline of various approaches and scopes of practice in music therapy with older adults
  • Four common intervention styles used by music therapists in the field
  • An overview of how music therapy and music initiatives affect care spaces for older adults

Week 2: Music Therapy and Older Adults with Cancer

  • An overview of current literature on music therapy and cancer care at end of life
  • Narrative case studies describing how various interventions are implemented (examples from the field in a cancer centre, general hospital, and residential hospice)
  • An overview of the physiological, emotional and psychosocial impact of music therapy on older adults with cancer at end of life, and an outline of typical goals of care

Week 3: Music Therapy and Older Adults with Dementia

  • An overview of current literature on music therapy and dementia at end of life
  • Narrative case studies describing how various interventions are implemented (examples from the field in a long term care facility)
  • An overview of the physiological, emotional and psychosocial impact of music therapy on older adults with dementia at end of life, and an outline of typical goals of care

Week 4: Music Therapy & End of Life Care, a Practical Approach

  • An opportunity to dialogue and discuss how music has influenced your own experiences of health care (your own, a patient’s, or a loved one’s experience)
  • A summary of practical ways in which you can support music therapy programming and music initiatives within your own care spaces
  • A summary of how music therapy and music initiatives impact health care spaces, and influence the culture of a health care model, and an overview of how music can support an interdisciplinary team

Instructor: SarahRose Black, MA, MMT (Music Therapist, University Health Network and Kensington Health) SarahRose holds a Masters degree in music education from the University of Toronto, and a Masters degree in music therapy at Wilfrid Laurier University. She is the founder and coordinator of the first music therapy programs at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Kensington Hospice in Toronto. Her clinical work and research is focused mainly on quality of life for acute palliative care, hematology, and hospice populations.
