[1] Call for Papers - Oral History Forum d’histoire orale - “Religious Individuals and Collective Identities: Special Issue on Oral History and Religion” - Deadlines: January 5, 2015 (Abstracts and CVs); May 5 2014 - Complete Papers

The study of religion and religious worlds is a vibrant tradition of inquiry—one that engages with the political and the historical, without reducing it to either. Because these worlds are real, vibrant, and significant to those who both inhabit and construct them, the work of oral history and ethnography seeks to render such realities in their depth, richness, and complexity, revealing the intersections and tensions between the religious individual and their community, between religion as prescribed, and religion as practiced. It is our hope that through engaging with oral history and ethnography as a

means of inquiry, the power and worth of such religious worlds as a means of acting, thinking, and being can be uncovered.

Oral History Forum d’histoire orale is currently seeking contributions that engage with oral history and religious history. This special issue aims to draw theoretical and methodological attention to some of the intersections between the religious individual and the collective, as well as to offer insights into some of the disparities or tensions between religious self-understanding and community identity, as revealed by oral history. University researchers, community organizers, educators, oral historians, public historians, artists,

and others who are working in this field are invited to submit theoretical and methodological papers, as well as empirically-based essays based on original research, reviews (books, new media, exhibitions, films, theatrical productions), and discussions for this special edition of the journal. Topics might include (but are not limited to) religion and immigration, religious conversion, religion and popular culture, connections of religion, gender, race/ethnicity, and class, and religious lives and state politics. All article submissions will be subject to the normal peer review process of the journal.

Oral History Forum d’histoire orale is the online journal of the Canadian Oral History Association www.oralhistoryforum.ca which serves as the online meeting place for scholars, community activists, librarians, archivists, and others who use oral history to explore the past and present. Through this open access collection, we hope to generate discussion on this important theme and provide valuable resource for people interested in the study of oral history and religious history, whether in the classroom or in their own

research. Articles will be published as soon as they are ready, ensuring a quick turn around time for early submissions. The collection will be launched in autumn 2015.

[2] Call for Papers - Western University’s 3rd Annual Anthropology Graduate Student Conference - “Confronting Categories” - Abstract Deadline: January 10, 2015

The Western Anthropology Graduate Society (WAGS) jointly with the Anthropology Undergraduate Society at Western University (London, ON) are pleased to announce Western University’s 3rd Annual Anthropology Graduate Student Conference entitled: Confronting Categories to be held from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8, 2015.

History, women’s studies, geography, sociology, political science, First Nations studies, as well as archaeology, linguistic, biological, and socio-cultural anthropology incorporate a wide range of techniques and strategies in order to explore the human experience. These disciplines converge in the use of categories to conceptualize and make sense of human behaviour and cultural practices. We invite abstracts that will facilitate scholarly discussion and critical thinking in one or more of three major areas of academic research as it relates to the application of categories in the social sciences:

  • How do the humans and nonhumans we study classify the observable world around them and why?

  • How does the use of categories in academia help or limit us in communicating our ideas? (i.e., what information is lost when we divide our data into categories? What information is gained?)

  • Which categories and labels still present in anthropological research (and other academic disciplines) are rooted in colonial thought, and how can we best decolonize the discipline(s)?

This conference provides the opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to reflect critically on how “categories” influence their own research, as well as broader academic and applied contexts.

We invite you to submit paper abstracts for 15-minute oral presentations by Saturday January 10, 2015 to [log in to unmask]. Please include your name and affiliation, paper title, abstract (up to 250 words), and 3-4 keywords.

We highly encourage students from outside of London, Ontario to make submissions. Non-London residents whose abstracts are received by the deadline (January 10, 2015) and are accepted will be eligible to apply for the Western Anthropology Conference Student Travel Bursary.

Updates, the program, keynote speaker(s), bursary guidelines and eligibility, and other resources will be posted on the conference website: http://anthropology.uwo.ca/graduate/association_clubs/wags_annual_graduate_student_conference.html.

[3] Call for Papers - MESAAS Graduate Conference - Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies - Columbia University, New York City - Deadline: January 10, 2015

The Organizing Committee of the 2015 MESAAS Graduate Student Conference at Columbia University is pleased to welcome abstract submissions for the annual conference which will take place March 5-6, 2015 at Columbia University. We are very happy to announce that Prof. Ann Stoler (The New School for Social Research) will be our keynote speaker.

This year’s themes for the conference include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Literatures and aesthetics (Classical, early modern, and contemporary genres of imaginative literature; the visual and performing arts; cinema studies)

[1] Technoscience Salon - “Queering Evidence” - Toronto - November 28, 2014

QUEERING EVIDENCE

Salon Theme: The goal of this salon is to highlight the use of affect as a lively and

unsettling tactic or methodology. For example, queer practitioners will punctuate their

arguments with personal anecdotes, charged imagery, and raw emotions, challenging

the insistence that we are supposed to remain detached when weighing the evidence.

This salon asks: How might we queer and reinvent conventional modes of thinking?

How can we morph the sensory organs of science to develop different ways of seeing,

touching, hearing, and smelling? How might we venture queer stories that capture and

inspire new approaches to evidence? Read more about our provocation here.

Presenters:  Lauren Corman (Sociology, BrockU)  and Mike Hoolboom (Award winning filmmaker)

Discussants: Cate Sandilands (FES, YorkU) and Andrew Zealley (FES, YorkU)

WHEN:  Friday, November 28, 2014, 4-6pm

[4] AAA Committee on Labor Relations and AQA session, “Queerness as a Site of Vulnerability in Academe” - Washington, D.C. - Friday, December 5, 11am-12:45pm.

This roundtable is of interest to LGBTQ anthropologists who serve as graduate student teaching/research assistants, adjunct faculty, visiting faculty in other temporary/term faculty positions or junior faculty on tenure-lines. The roundtable questions whether the seemingly “gay-friendly” popular climate extends to queer academics in higher education.

·         Are there particular vulnerabilities facing of LGBTQ graduate teaching assistants? term faculty?  junior faculty?

·        Do these vulnerabilities intersect with vulnerabilities already associated with race, class and gender in such studies as Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia)?

·       Are there concrete actions that the Committee on Labor relations, AQA and AAA can take to address these concerns?

Any further questions, please contact organizers Christa Craven at [log in to unmask] and/or Bill Leap wlm@american.edu.
