*[1] Journal - Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education - Deadline:
Ongoing*

Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education invites research from a
variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives that emphasize the
centrality of marginal voices and a

peripheral gaze, and which draw attention to the complex interrelations
between political, economic, historical, and social contexts, as well as
the ways in which these various contexts shape educational policies,
practices, curricula, and outcomes.

The journal welcomes articles that ground theoretical reflections in
specific empirical research and case studies of diverse locations and
peoples as yet underrepresented within scholarly research and literature,
as well as action or participatory research studies of exemplary or “best”
practices.

Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education: Studies of Migration,
Integration, Equity, and Cultural Survival (DIME) a quarterly
peer-reviewed journal focused on critical discourse and research in
diaspora, indigenous, and minority education is dedicated to researching
cultural sustainability in a world increasingly consolidating under
national, transnational, and global organizations. It aims to draw
attention to, and learn from, the many initiatives being conducted around
the globe in support of diaspora, indigenous, and minority education, which
might otherwise go unnoticed.

*[2] Proposal - Annual Meeting - American Academy of Religion's
Anthropology of Religion Group - Deadline: March 2, 2015*

I'm writing to encourage you to submit paper and panel proposals to the
American Academy of Religion's Anthropology of Religion Group for the next
Annual Meeting (Nov. 21-24, Atlanta). The deadline is *March 2*, submitted
to the PAPERS system:
https://papers.aarweb.org/content/welcome.
Laurel Zwissler, co-chair, Anthropology of Religion Group

Call for Papers:

We invite proposals from the full range of anthropological theories and
methods that explore diverse traditions, regions, and periods.

We welcome alternative and creative format sessions that involve
presentations other than read manuscripts (including film, multimedia, and
performance) and those that offer more opportunity for dialogue and
collaboration among presenters, respondents, and audiences.

We especially encourage individual and panel submissions that address:

1) the spirit of this year's theme, Valuing Religion, such as
anthropologies of value and/or the value of anthropology in the study of
religion;\

2) flirtations and fetishes in the field and the impact of these upon the
ethnographer and the ethnographer's work;

3) the value of alternative scholarly forms, not only beyond dense academic
prose, but also beyond writing (what emerging and/or underused forms of
ethnography can be brought to bear on the evocation, representation, and
interpretation of local, moral, interpersonal worlds?)
This could include, but is not limited to, the value of film and visual
methods in the anthropological study of religion. Preferably, presentations
will incorporate demonstrations of alternative methods. We are interested
especially in proposals on film in the study of ritual, especially with
regard to the use of film in fieldwork or ethnographic filmm aking, for a
potential joint session with the Ritual Studies Group.;

4) sensuous scholarship - à la Paul Stoller, David Howes, and others - in
which the scholar-researcher's body and bodily experiences are incorporated
into the work, moving beyond an instrumental use of the body as the means
by which the scholar-researcher's brain is transported to and from the
field;

5) ethnographies of internet, virtual, and digital communities;

6) personhood and conceptions of the self in theology and anthropology;

7) religious virtuosity, innovation, experimentation, and creativity.

The Anthropology of Religion Group will also quint-sponsor a panel on
Birgit Meyer's forthcoming book, Sensational Movies: Video, Vision and
Christianity in Ghana (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2015), in
collaboration with the World Christianity Group; the Religion, Film, and
Visual Culture Group; the African Religions Group; and the Religion,
Colonialism and Postcolonialism Group. Selection of panelists will be
pre-arranged so that they may read Meyer's book as provided by the press in
advance of the meetings in order to comment on it. Prof. Meyer will
summarize her book's argument, and at least one panelist will comment on
the methodological aspects of Prof. Meyer's book. We are soliciting no
papers for this session but encouraging our members and other interested
parties to attend for what will be a truly multi-disciplinary discussion
focused on religion and Africa.

*[8] Post-doctoral Research Fellowship - Asia Research Institute – National
University of Singapore - Deadline: April 1, 2015*

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) was established as a university-level
institute in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the National
University of Singapore (NUS). The mission of the Institute is to provide a
world-class focus and resource for research on the Asian region, located at
one of its communication hubs. ARI engages the humanities and social
sciences broadly defined, and especially interdisciplinary frontiers
between and beyond disciplines. Through frequent provision of short-term
research appointments it seeks to be a place of encounters between the
region and the world. Within NUS it works particularly with the Faculties
of Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Law and Design, to support
conferences, lectures, and graduate study at the highest level. Home to a
strong team of full-time researchers, the ARI provides support for doctoral
and postdoctoral research, conferences, workshops, seminars, and study
groups. It welcomes visiting scholars who wish to conduct their research on
Asia in Singapore, and encourages collaboration with other Asian research
institutes worldwide.

ARI’s Religion and Globalization cluster is dedicated to exploring global
reconfigurations of religion and its diverse manifestations in Asian
contexts. Our work examines dynamics of secularization and religion the
modern period, as well as related issues of authority and tradition in
contemporary religious discourse and practice. The Cluster’s central focus
over the coming years is on Religion and Development in Asia. This research
project seeks to explore how religious actors, discourses, and practices
intersect with development efforts, and how these engagements result in
changes in our understandings of both “religion” and “development”. This
work aims to stimulate a re-thinking of long held assumptions about the
apparent binary opposition between “religion” and “development.” A
prominent feature of our work in this area is the cultivation of sustained
engagement between practitioners and academics, with an eye to producing
analysis that is relevant both to theory and to practice.

The Cluster now welcomes applications for post-doctoral research fellows to
join a new project on “Religion and NGOs in Asia,” funded by a grant from
the Henry Luce Foundation. The goal of this project is to explore the
negotiations and engagement of religious NGOs in Asia with policy and
regulatory frameworks at multiple levels – sub-national, national, and
trans-national. This work will explore four policy dimensions: 1) policies
of states towards religious NGOs, 2) policies of development organizations
(donors, UN agencies, state agencies) in engaging with religious NGOs, 3)
policies and tactics of religious NGOs in responding to states and
trans-national actors; and 4) internal policies and practices of religious
NGOs. We are seeking applications from outstanding early career researchers
to work full time on this project. Scholars from across the social sciences
with a strong background in the study of religion and/or NGOs in the
context of Asia are invited to apply.

Successful applicants will be based at the Asia Research Institute in
Singapore. They will work closely with the existing team of researchers
while also carrying out their own independent research on matters of direct
relevance to the wider project. They will be engaged in full-time research
tasks, including undertaking fieldwork in East and/or Southeast Asia,
conference organizing, publishing academic papers and other media
resources, and project management. Candidates will also deliver research
seminar(s) and participate in relevant international conferences.

ANTHR 396 LEC 800 (32403): Ethnographic Field Training
Belgrade, Serbia (June 1-28, 2015)

SCHOOL FOR ETHNOGRAPHIC SENSIBILITY
<https://sites.google.com/a/ualberta.ca/anthr396-serbia/home>
BELGRADE, JUNE 2015

Belgrade, Serbia will become your laboratory for developing ethnographic
skills that attune you to the nonverbal, tacit underpinnings of every
culture. Through a series of playful field exercises that rely on different
sensory modalities and embodied experience rather than on the knowledge of
the local language, you will learn how to perceive hidden patterns in the
flows of everyday life. We will show you how to break your usual perceptual
habits and develop an acute receptivity to the different ways in which
people greet each other and bargain, inhabit space and use objects,
manipulate time, mix smells and tastes, queue for a bus, hail a taxi, or
dance at a party. By adopting techniques used in artist training you will
learn to notice things like timing, rhythms of movement, and other patterns
in the everyday urban life that natives usually don’t. Finally, we will
encourage you to explore alternative and artistic forms of representation
through writing, film, performance, and other arts in order to share this
findings with others.
