The Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize for outstanding
anthropological scholarship by a student on a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgendered topic
Deadline
for Submission: June 1, 2015
The
Kenneth W. Payne Student Prize is presented each year by the Association for
Queer Anthropology (AQA) to a graduate or undergraduate student in
acknowledgment of outstanding anthropological work on 1) a lesbian, gay,
bisexual or transgendered topic, or 2) a critical interrogation of sexualities
and genders more broadly defined. The Prize includes a cash award in the amount
of $400. Submissions are encouraged from graduate or undergraduate students in
any of the four fields of anthropology. To be eligible for consideration, work
should have been completed since June 2014 and while the applicant was still
enrolled as a student. Research papers as well as visual media (e.g.
documentary film) are eligible for submission for this competition.
Papers
should be no longer than 40 pages, double-spaced, and typed in 11 or 12 point
font; published papers or works accepted for publication will not be accepted
for review. Visual media should run no longer than 60 minutes; media projects
already under contract for commercial distribution will not be accepted for
review.
THE
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS JUNE 1, 2015. Submit an electronic copy of the
print submission as a Word (*.doc) or RTF (rich text format or *.rtf)
attachment to [log in to unmask] on or before the indicated deadline. Visual media projects
should be available for download from an accessible website; send an email to [log in to unmask] identifying the visual media project and indicating its
accessibility. In either case, include with your email message a statement
showing your intent to enter the 2015 Kenneth W. Payne Prize competition.
Include your name, address, department and university, telephone number, and
email address in the body of the email; in addition, indicate the stage of your
graduate or undergraduate work at the time the submission was developed. You
will receive a confirmation email that your submission has been received within
a week of its receipt. Please only send duplicate copies or emails if you have
not received a response after two weeks.
Submissions
will be judged according to the following criteria: use of relevant L/G/B/T/Q
and/or feminist anthropological theory and literature, potential for contribution
to and advancement of L/G/B/T/Q studies and our understanding of sexualities
worldwide, attention to difference (such as gender, class, race, ethnicity,
nation), originality, organization and coherence, and timeliness. The award
will be presented to the winner at the AQA Business meeting during the annual
meetings of the American Anthropological Association (Denver, CO) November
18-22, 2015.

2015 CAE Outstanding Dissertation Award: Call for Nominations
The Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE)
has established an annual award to recognize the author of an outstanding
dissertation recently completed in the field of anthropology and education.
Nomination
Any member of CAE in good standing can nominate
a recently completed dissertation for this award.
Eligibility
A nominated dissertation should have been
successfully defended no earlier than 3 calendar years prior to the year in
which it is nominated.
Deadline
Nominations should be sent by June 15, 2015, to

Nomination Materials
The nomination should include the following:
(1) A completed cover page outlining:
a. Nominee's name and contact information,
including email address
b. Nominee's dissertation title, institution
from which nominee received the PhD, and date degree was conferred
c. Nominator's name and contact information
(2) A 20-page (5,000 words maximum) abstract of
the dissertation written by the nominee; and
(3) A letter, not to exceed three pages, from
the nominator summarizing the strengths of the dissertation, including the
strength of anthropological theory and method, scholarly excellence, the
relevance to educational anthropology, innovative or insightful approaches, and
implications for research and practice in the field of educational anthropology;
(4) If the nominator is not a member of the
nominee's dissertation committee, the nomination should be accompanied by a
supporting letter from a member of the dissertation committee;
Evaluation Guidelines
The dissertation award committee will be guided
by such considerations as:
(1) The issue addressed in the study bridges the
theories and practices of anthropology and education;
(2) The author-researcher applies
anthropological methods and concepts in handling and reporting data thoroughly
and insightfully; and
(3) The study is of high quality and makes an
important contribution to the field.
Finalists
A short
list of finalists will be selected over the summer. Finalists will be asked to
submit copies of their completed dissertation within 2 weeks of notification.
The winner will be selected from among the finalists and selected on the basis
of a reading of the completed dissertation by all members of the award
committee.

The Society for Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology
(SLACA), a section of the American
Anthropological Association, announces the opening of its *annual book
prize* competition. The prize aims to recognize distinguished
anthropological work that advances the understanding of the Americas in
innovative and potentially transformative ways. The winner is announced
at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association. A
cash prize accompanies the award.
• * The deadline for
submission is Jul 1, 2015*. Books received after that date will not be
considered for the prize.
• To be eligible for
consideration a book must be relevant to the field of Latin American and
Caribbean anthropology. Works that focus on Latin American migrant and
diasporic populations will also be considered. Works should be
ethnographies or monographs. Textbooks and anthologies will not be considered, but works of original scholarship
by more than one author may be submitted.
• The book must be an
author’s first book.

The book must have a publication year of 2014.
• Works in English,

Community Health Sciences - Research Associate (Indigenous
Health)

The University of Manitoba's Department of Community Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences within the College of Medicine, have an immediate opening for a Research Associate in the area of Indigenous Health.
The successful candidate will be expected to focus on and contribute in a significant manner to the research activities of the following two research projects:
"Towards Closing the Gap: Using evidence to identify the needs for investments in primary health care services in BC First Nations reserves". The objective of this program of research is to define a baseline of essential PHC services required to meet the needs of FN reserve communities. The findings will assist the BC First Nation Health Council in its decision-making, priority setting and advocacy roles. These findings will also be used to inform priority areas for the deployment of telehealth initiatives (local, regional or BC-wide), currently under planning in BC. The research lead for this project is Dr. Josée Lavoie.
"iPHIT: Innovation in Community-based Primary Healthcare Supporting Transformation in the Health of First Nations and Rural/remote Manitoba Communities" is a program of research which aims to understand community-based health services in First Nation and remote communities of Manitoba. The research project will further help to: work with First Nation communities that have developed different primary health care delivery models; describe these models of care; identify key ingredients for success from the perspective of First Nations and rural and remote communities; further develop health care models to improve the scope and delivery of community-based primary health care services; and, support the implementation of these models in other communities to bring about better health care outcomes. The research project lead is Dr. Alan Katz, in collaboration with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and eight First Nation communities.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in the health, social sciences or a related discipline along with three years of experience with research or project management. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Applicants should have experience in qualitative and quantitative health research and data management along with previous work experience involving First Nations People. Applicants must have working knowledge of SPSS, NVivo, and Reference Manager.
The successful applicant will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively with the research teams and participate in research meetings. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently is mandatory, along with: demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience with employee supervision; and the ability to work with various stakeholder groups.
The appointment is expected to last up to two years with an anticipated end date of March 31, 2017. The salary will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

The Department of Anthropology, University of
Toronto, invites applications for a two-year teaching-stream appointment in
Biological (Evolutionary) Anthropology, with a focus on human nutritional
ecology and especially the nutrition and health of women, infants and young
children. The appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer and will begin July
1, 2015 and end June 30, 2017, with the possibility of renewal. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applicants
must have a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related discipline by July 1, 2015
or shortly thereafter and have a record of excellence in teaching, in both
small and large class settings, and teaching-related activities such as
curriculum development and student mentoring, and demonstrated evidence of
expertise in biological, medical, and/or nutritional anthropology.
The
successful candidate will be prepared to teach a suite of undergraduate courses
that may include a large second-year course on medical anthropology and
evolutionary perspectives on health across the life span, a somewhat smaller
third-year course on evolutionary theory, as well as smaller courses at the
third- and fourth-year level that could include one on the anthropology of
childhood and childcare. We are also open to courses on other topics, such as
anthropological epidemiology, demography, or paleopathology. The successful
candidate could anticipate teaching at least one upper-year course in the
second year in her or his specific area of expertise. Opportunities for pedagogical
research and scholarship, while outside the scope of this position, will be
provided and encouraged. Experience at graduate teaching would also be an asset.
The
University of Toronto is a large, three-campus institution in a vibrant,

CALL FOR LECTURERS:
The
Toronto Chapter of the SSEA invites graduate students to submit proposals for
lectures to be given during our 2015-2016 Lecture Series (September - April).
The lectures have to be connected to Egypt, spanning the time periods from
Prehistory to the Coptic Period. All lectures will take place on the St. George
Campus of the University of Toronto. Lecturers receive a $100.00 honorarium.
Interested students should send a title and brief abstract of their proposed

Only proposals submitted in electronic format [i.e. via email] will be

addition, the SSEA Toronto and Montreal Chapters are keeping up their
