Western Libraries is seeking applications for an 8 month Archives
Assistant (Young Canada Works Intern) position. The primary focus
of the work of the Archives Assistant (YCW Intern) will be on
enhancing awareness of and access to the James A. Worrall Fonds and
the Gustav Mahler-Alfred Rosé Collection Collection by completing
their arrangement and description, preparing RAD compliant finding
aids, and preparing exhibits to promote their use.
James Worrall (1914-2011) was one of Canada’s most
distinguished Olympians, representing Canada in some official
capacity at all Olympic Games from 1936 (where he was Canada's
flag bearer in the opening ceremonies) until shortly before his
death. He played a key role in the development of amateur sport
in Canada and around the world. He was a charter member of the
Canadian Olympic Association, serving as President from 1961 to
1968 and being appointed an Honorary Life President in 1989.
He became a member of the International Olympic Committee in
1967 and was made an Honorary Member for life when he retired as
a voting member in 1989.
The original Gustav Mahler-Alfred Rosé Collection was donated
to Western by Mrs. Maria C. Rosé, widow of Professor Alfred
Rosé, who was the nephew of composer Gustav Mahler and the son
of Arnold Rosé (concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic
Orchestra and leader of the Rosé String Quartet). This
donation comprised personal letters from Mahler, chiefly to his
sister Justine, as well as "celebrity letters" to Gustav Mahler
and Arnold Rosé; letters and postcards written by Mahler to his
family during the period of ca. 1880-1910; other related
letters, postcards, and ephemera; and musical manuscripts and
scores. Six additional supplements were subsequently received.
In addition to work on these two important fonds/collections, the
successful candidate will assist in serving the patrons of Western's
Archives and Research Collections Centre by providing basic public
service and also work with colleagues on several other archival
functions, including acquisition and accessioning, basic
conservation, etc.
While interested candidates must register with Young Canada Works to
be eligible to be hired (see: https://www.youngcanadaworks.ca/index-eng.cfm)
in order to comply with Western's hiring policies all candidates
must apply through the University's "Working at Western" website,
where detailed information about the position is also available
(see: http://www.uwo.ca/hr/working/staff/index.html).
The deadline for applications to Western is May 23, 2015.
