[1] Submissions - Graduate Student Journal - PlatForum

PlatForum Volume 16, Spring 2015

Call for Submissions

PlatForum is a peer-reviewed journal published by the graduate students in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Committed to upholding a tradition of holistic anthropology, PlatForum welcomes a diverse range of topics and issues from all four sub-disciplines: archaeology, social-cultural, biological-physical, and linguistic .Recognizing the benefits of both interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary contributions made by students outside the field of anthropology, we continue to extend our call to all graduate students from community colleges and universities across Canada. This year’s edition speaks to the theme of ‘Contemporary Anthropology’. While this theme is obviously broad, we hope to encourage those whom have publishable articles that deal with new technologies, techniques, methodologies, and theories within the four-fields of anthropology.

Keywords: Contemporary archaeology; interdisciplinary study; experimental archaeology; integrative anthropology; cultural geographies

.All submissions should look at how efforts to ‘push the boundaries’ if you will, of anthropology, can enable new types of investigation, practice, and knowledge formation. Each submission will be evaluated through a system of peer-review, judged on the basis of originality, engagement, and compliance to the theme of the edition. While PlatForum is an anthropological journal in nature, graduate students from related fields such as social science, the humanities, and history are encouraged to apply.

Type: Edited Volume

Proposal to be submitted to CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group

Volume Abstract:  As the global climate shifts, communities are faced with a myriad of mitigation and adaptation challenges. These challenges highlight the political, cultural, economic, social, and physical vulnerability of communities, groups, and individuals. However, these challenges can also demonstrate their resilience. Research in the fields of hazard management, humanitarian response, food security programming, agricultural development, and gender-equity programming have sought to understand the factors that create vulnerability, and strategies to enhance resilience in individuals, families, and communities.

This volume will bring together case studies from communities around the globe, indigenous populations, and developing countries that illustrate programming that internalizes these dyadic concepts of resilience and vulnerability. Specifically, the volume will examine programs that have helped reduce risks brought on by political instability, climate change, natural disasters, chronic food insecurity, inequality, and other problems that cause human suffering. Our goal is to both foster a richer understanding of the variations in vulnerability, and to derive lessons on fostering resilience that can be employed on a broader scale. Documenting the best practices for building resilience will be a major focus of the book.

We are seeking interdisciplinary abstract submissions for a peer-reviewed manuscript. Nutritionists, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, policy makers, disaster managers, community leaders, indigenous community organizations, and others are invited to submit abstracts. The volume will be submitted to CRC, part of the Taylor and Francis Group, for publication consideration. This proposal has been requested by an acquiring editor.

We will accept abstracts as well as full papers for this stage of the process. Full length papers should be limited to 5,000 words. Inclusion of graphs and photos are welcome and encouraged. However, please account for these in your paper length. One half-page graph or photo is the equivalent of 250 words. This is volume has an international focus. We welcome submissions focusing on all nations.

2. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES AND AWARDS || PRIX ET BOURSES

[1] Fellowships - MA Social Determinants and Innovation in Health, Doctoral, Research Associate, Supplementary Post-Doctoral, and Senior Academic - Comparative Program on Health and Society (CPHS) - University of Toronto - Deadline for Applications: May 29, 2015

REMINDER: CPHS FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 29

We invite fellowship applications for the 2015/2016 academic year at the Comparative Program on Health and Society (CPHS), a vital and growing research institute based out of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. Generously funded by the Lupina Foundation, the CPHS supports innovative, interdisciplinary, comparative research on the social dimensions of health, broadly defined through our extensive range of fellowships. Our program builds on the scholarly strengths of the University of Toronto in the social sciences, humanities, and public health.

Since 2001, the CPHS has been funding outstanding young scholars who conduct innovative research on the social dimensions of health. As the CPHS moves into its second decade, we have adopted a renewed vision of the social determinants of health which recognizes the complexity and interrelatedness of domestic, transnational, regional and global factors that may impact on health conditions and access to entrenched health inequalities may require policy-makers, communities and researchers to grapple with challenging ethical, human rights and social justice questions. We have accordingly expanded the thematic focus of the Comparative Program to accommodate research which specifically focuses on these definitional and operational challenges.

Applying to the Comparative Program on Health and Society

For 2015/2016, we are offering MA Social Determinants and Innovation in Health, Doctoral, Research Associate, Supplementary Post-Doctoral, and Senior Academic fellowships. To determine if a CPHS fellowship is right for you, we suggest the following steps:

-Determine if your current status makes you eligible for one of our fellowships.

-Determine if your research project meets our requirements for research proposals.

-Determine if you will be able to meet the application deadline.

More details and applications packages (with instructions) can be found by following the links at the bottom of the fellowship descriptions, below.

Eligible Research

In order to be eligible to receive a fellowship from CPHS, your research proposal must be both comparative in scope and fall within one of our three research themes. We welcome applications from all academic disciplines, particularly those within the social sciences and humanities.

Comparative Research

The CPHS believes that comparative research has the potential to reveal general structures and processes underpinning the social determinants of health.

We recognize that comparison can take many forms. The CPHS is open to research proposals that may involve any one of the following types of comparison: between countries, within a single country, longitudinal, single cases that test a comparative theory, single cases that may help generate one, or meta-theoretical inquiries.

The CPHS encourages proposals from a wide range of methodological perspectives such as: quantitative, comparative, historical, feminist, legal, and post-structuralist.

We will consider research projects using other types and methods of comparison not mentioned above.

Research Theme

In order to be eligible for a CPHS fellowship, your research project must explore aspects of the social determinants of health. This theme encourages applicants to explore social, economic, cultural and political determinants of health (as defined by Health Canada and the World Health Organization) at the local, national and global levels in six primary areas:

A. Socioeconomic status and health outcomes—Research will investigate the role of public policy, civil society groups and transnational and global actors and institutions in mediating the relationship between income inequality, socio-economic status and health effects.

B. Socioeconomic status and access to health and health-related services—Research will explore the impact of the relationship between demographic, gender or socio-economic factors, the level and distribution of public and private investment in these areas and the design of programs on access to health and health related-services by various groups in society.

C. Accountability mechanisms for health—Research will explore mechanisms that link patients, providers, payers, investors and citizens under different institutional arrangements, and address among other issues, the information requirements of various accountability mechanisms. Research can focus on such mechanisms at the domestic, transnational or global levels, and on interactions between these levels.

D. Social innovation related to the social determinants of health —Research will seek to bridge the fields of economic innovation and health innovation in relation to the social determinants of health.

E. Human rights, ethics and the philosophical dimensions of health – Research will explore emerging or entrenched social determinants of health issues from the perspective of international and/or comparative human rights law, public health ethics, bioethics and/or other philosophical approaches to achieving social justice and equity in relation to health.

F. Globalization and health – Research will explore the impact of the processes of globalization on the social determinants of health. Globalization is understood to encompass rapid accelerations in traded goods, services and capital, changing patterns of production and exchange, labour market integration and migration. Potential research areas may include: global health governance and diplomacy, international trade and economic laws impacting health (particularly maternal and child health), emerging infectious disease pandemics, health human resource migration, climate change, and HIV/AIDS policy.

Deadline for Lupina MA, Research Associate, Doctoral, Post-Doctoral, and Senior Academic fellowship applications is May 29.

Minoan Mystery or Modern Masterpiece?  The ‘Minoan Goddess’ of the Royal Ontario Museum

In 1931, the ROM bought a small ivory figurine thought to come from Minoan Crete, although it had no attested archaeological findspot. It was authenticated by Arthur Evans, excavator of Minoan Knossos, who identified it as the goddess of the bull leapers depicted in Minoan frescoes. The ‘goddess’ became an icon of the ROM’s Bronze Age collection, but it is now generally believed to be a modern fake, created by Cretan craftsmen in the early 20th century. However, although the antiquity of the goddess is questioned, the age of the figurine has never been proved conclusively. This talk discusses a recent re-examination of the ROM ‘goddess’ to consider problems with detecting forged antiquities, even through scientific analysis.t sets the figurine in the context of debates about authenticity and how forgeries have affected modern understanding of antiquity.
