***PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY TO YOUR COMMUNITY*** A vulnerability has surfaced in QuickTime for Windows that allows a Windows system to be compromised when you click on a link or visit a website that allows hackers to remotely connect to your computer. Apple has not released an update to fix this vulnerability. Although computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work, using unsupported software will increase the risks from viruses and other security threats. Potential negative consequences include loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data. The only mitigation available is to uninstall QuickTime for Windows. Since known exploits have been seen on the Internet, UIT Information Security recommends that users uninstall QuickTime immediately. UIT will be removing QuickTime from all UIT managed student labs, classrooms and meeting spaces, and highly recommends that you uninstall QuickTime immediately from your Windows computers. An alternative to QuickTime for Windows is the VLC media player.
