There is a newspaper advertisement for Only One Night, and Only a Portion of That! MARK TWAIN will deliver a Lecture on the Sandwich Islands.... in the Sacramento Daily Union of October 10, 1866, page 4, col. 6. Google California Digital Newspaper Collection. The ad includes the bearded woman, six legged cow and, quote, That Curious and Unaccountable Freak of Nature, The Irish Giant, Who stands 9 fee That Curious and Unaccountable Freak of Nature, The Irish Giant! Who stands 9 feet 6 inches in hight and has a breadth of beam in proportion and who has been the pet of kings and the honored associate of the nobility and gentry of the old world, will not be present and need not be expected. The King of the Islands! Failed to arrive in season for the Lecture in San Francisco, but may be confidently expected on this occasion. endquote. I am sure I have seen other such ads in the California newspapers but that was the first one I found tonight. It's quite possible posters were made with this wording, but I don't know of any that survive. Fatout says "huge posters" were plastered all over, but cites no source. That isn't to say he didn't have a source, but I should like to know it. Paine merely says "advertisements" and what Paine cites appeared in a newspaper, which could also have appeared as a handbill. I only make this distinction because posters were not cheap to produce and print, unlike handbills which are much less trouble and cost far less. Without a source or a surviving example, you could give birth to a bibliographical ghost. A small poster published in San Francisco in 1868 does have jokey wording, but not what Paine or Fatout cite. There are still other posters and handbills known, but none that I've seen with that wording. I'd love to know of one.
