In recognition of Black History Month in February, join us for a retrospective of Claire Prieto and Roger McTair’s ground-breaking films capturing Black History in Ontario.

Some Black Women (1975)

This documentary reviews the state of Black women's roles and lives in the 1970s. Considered the first film produced in Canada by independent Black film makers, the film features historic images from the Alvin McCurdy collection, now held at the Archives of Ontario.

Different Timbres (1980)

Steel drum production, education, performance and cultural influence in Ontario in the 1970s and 1980s are at the centre of this documentary. Highlights include performances by university and primary school students!

Home to Buxton (1987)

This documentary explores the history of Buxton, Ontario, an early Black settlement with roots in the 19th century.  The film features interviews with Buxton residents about family history, town history, farming, and the community, and footage of the town’s annual homecoming weekend 1986.
