Paul O'Neill, the old Yankee outfielder, continued claiming to be a "direct descendant" of MT for many years, and the Yankees evidently agreed with him for a long time. For all I know, he still does: there are still websites touting him that way, like this one: http://www.behindthebombers.com/oneill.html I think it turned out he was a distant relative, but I do not recall the actual connection. Also, I may have missed it in these threads, but of course there are the recent claims of Susan Bailey as being the granddaughter of Clara, through Nina. This claim has been -- putting it mildly -- contested by Twain scholars. -hb On Sun, Jan 8, 2017 at 11:59 AM, William Cosgrove <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > At North Dakota State University in Fargo I had a young undergraduate > student named Clemens who assured me he was a descendent of Mark Twain. > It was about 20-30 years ago, and, as I recall, he claimed to be a great, > great, great nephew (give or take a great).
