As part of our Reel Heritage initiative, Giovanna Fossati, Chief Curator at EYE Filmmuseum and professor at the University of Amsterdam, will present a public lecture that explores findings from her recent books, Exposing the Film Apparatus and Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema. Following her talk, Exposing Film Heritage: New Directions in Research and Presentation, Fossati will screen a selection of silent shorts from the EYE’s collection.

Launched in 2014, Reel Heritage is an ongoing examination of the challenges and opportunities facing moving-image collections and the importance of film preservation. This event is supported by the Government of Canada and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Giovanna Fossati is a professor of Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam, where she has taught in the "MA Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image" program since it was established in 2003. She is also the Chief Curator at EYE Filmmuseum where she supervises a collection of more than 40,000 titles. Fossati’s research areas include film heritage and film restoration, digitization and digital cinema, film archival theory, and colour in silent cinema. She is the author of From Grain to Pixel: The Archival Life of Film in Transition (09), co-author with Tom Gunning, Joshua Yumibe and Jonathon Rosen of Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema (15), and co-editor with Annie van den Oever of Exposing the Film Apparatus. The Film Archive as a Research Laboratory (16).

Attend in person: Tickets to this event are free and will be made available on the day of the event at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Box Office (350 King Street West, Toronto Ontario), beginning two hours prior to the event start time.
