There is an account of Twain's reaction t= o=0A= a discussion on the topic at a meeting of the Radical Club on Nov 16, 1874= =0A= that is recorded on pages 186-187 of Mrs John T. Sargent's SKETCHES AND=0A= REMINISCENCES OF THE RADICAL CLUB (Boston, 1880). Twain attended the meetin= g=0A= with Joe Twichell, who I think was Sargent's source for the details of the= =0A= conversation between Twain and Twichell which took place on the street as= =0A= they left the meeting that evening. If I recall correctly, Twain said that= =0A= if the doctrine was true that he'd inherited a tired or worn out soul=0A= himself. Mrs Sargent was the widow of the Unitarian minister (1807-1877)= =0A= who'd founded the club in 1867. I have not looked lately, but there may be= =0A= information on this in Steve Courtney's biography of Twichell, or elsewhere= .=0A= =0A= Kevin=0A= @=0A= Mac Donnell Rare Books=0A= 9307 Glenlake Drive=0A= Austin TX 78730=0A= 512-345-4139=0A= Member: ABAA, ILAB=0A= *************************=0A= You may browse our books at:=0A= www.macdonnellrarebooks.com=0A= =0A= =0A= -----Original Message-----=0A= From: Dave Davis=0A= Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2017 8:41 PM=0A= To: [log in to unmask] Subject: "Transmigration of souls" -- and epochs and bodies=0A= =0A= I'm re-reading A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and enjoying it= =0A= once again after having first read it decades ago.=0A= =0A= This line, near the beginning, is still striking:=0A= =0A= "You know about transmigration of souls; do you know about transposition of= =0A= epochs--and bodies?"=0A= =0A= Does anyone on-list know of additional background for SLC to have been=0A= exposed to, and prompted to, thinking about such abstruse doctrines?
