In chapter 32 of Following the Equator, Twain remarks that Maori legend
has it that a previous people were driven into the sea and/or under
ground and that Moas are not found in Maori legends.  This seems to
contradict most everything I have found about the arrival and early
Maori populations.  Where did Twain get his information?  There is some
speculation about Caucasian populations but these ideas are all pretty
much discredited.
