2018 AAO Conference Registration is now open!

March 1st, 2018

Early bird registration for the Archives Association of Ontario (AAO) 2018 Conference is now open! The theme of the conference is Celebrations: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Information about conference events, workshops and logistics, including a draft conference-at-a-glance (PDF), is available on the conference website.

The AAO conference is being jointly hosted at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario from May 9 - 11, 2018 on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples.

Do not miss out on the early bird registration which will run from March 1 to April 1, 2018. Member rates are available to members of the AAO.

We’re looking forward to a wonderful conference in Waterloo! Come early for one of the three pre-conference workshops on Wednesday May 9th: Introduction to Digital Preservation, Archival Description with RAD or Subject Headings and Taxonomies. On Thursday, keynote speaker Andrew Hunter, Senior Curator, Art Gallery of Guelph, will kick off an excellent program with a talk titled: “In the Belly of the Whale: Reflections on the Precarious Future(s) of the Aging Settler/Colonial Museums and Archives of Canada.” The conference closes with a talk by Carole Gerson from Simon Fraser University titled: “Recognition and Commemoration of Pauline Johnson”.

We have social activities sure to please everyone from epicures to early-bird fitness enthusiasts. Be sure to arrive in time for the opening reception at the beautiful, newly-renovated Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and stay for the conference banquet at Kitchener’s celebrated restaurant The Berlin (registration required). The Conference Pub will be the Lion Brewery at the historic Heuther Hotel in uptown Waterloo. Don’t stay up too late trying the Lion Brewery’s craft beer, though, because you won’t want to miss the first-ever AAO Conference Fun Run and Walk at 7:30am on Friday May 11. Finally, don’t forget to sign up for the behind-the-scenes tours of some of Waterloo Region’s archives, museums and libraries.

The pre-conference activities, including the first-timer’s reception will take place at the University of Waterloo on Wednesday May 9. Then we’ll move up the street to Wilfrid Laurier University for the remainder of the conference.

Looking forward to seeing you in May!
