When this essay was included as Vol. 22 in the Uniform Editions of Mark Twain's works and published in 1900, American Publishing Co. hired Forrest Morgan to proofread the earlier volumes before they were reprinted and new plates made. No extensive examination has been made of the changes Morgan implemented for this volume (Vol. 22 in the set). Morgan's 22-volume set of the Royal Edition with his annotations is in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, a gift from William Lyon Phelps in 1922. An exact answer may be found to your question by examining Morgan's copy and marginalia. My chapter on this volume is online at: http://www.twainquotes.com/UniformEds/UniformEdsCh24.html Barb
