Members of the School of Health Policy and Management are all horrified by the racist anti-Muslim murders in London, Ontario of Salman Afzaal, 46, Madiha Salman, 44, daughter Yumna Salman, 15, and her 74 year old grandmother whose name hasn't been released, as well as the serious wounding of nine year old son Fayez. This atrocity is a horrifying tragedy for the Afzaal family and all those who knew and loved them, as well as for all Canadians who value the lives of all people regardless of how people look or what religious belief they may practice.

For Muslim Canadians, the murders of the Afzaal family stokes justified fears of what they can and can't do when living their daily lives, including just going outside for a walk. We call upon elected officials to do more to combat Islamophobia in Canada and, indeed, to combat discrimination and violence against all racial, ethnic and religious groups in Canada, including opposing Bill 21 in Quebec, which bans people from wearing visible signs of their personal religious beliefs in public sector employment. This law especially affects people from many different religious, immigrant and/or racialized communities, and stokes exactly the kind of prejudices that devastate the lives of practicing believers by singling them out for scorn based on their personal appearance.

We know that York University students, faculty and staff who are Muslim may feel isolated and fearful for their safety and the safety of their loved ones as a result of these murders in London. We also know that some of you have experienced Islamophobic racism and hatred. We express our solidarity with you and your families and offer whatever support we can to you and your loved ones. You are not alone and are valued members of the School of Health Policy & Management and our wider community.
