Volunteer Opportunity for PSychology Alumni

Dr. Jodi Martin is seeking former York psychology students to join a panel about applying research methods and skills in the (non-academic) workplace. The panel will be a part of my PSYC2030 Introduction to Research Methods course, and is intended to highlight the real world applicability of the knowledge and skills that students learn through this course. This panel has run twice previously with excellent reception from students! Hearing from people like you is very much of value to them!

Panelists will be past graduates who find themselves applying research methods of any sort (including literature searching, knowledge translation or interpretating and summary of existing research findings) in their jobs post-graduation. Priority will be given to those individuals who have an undergraduate degree in psychology and are now working in some capacity that uses their research skills.

Selected panel speakers will be asked to:

1) Record a 5-7 minute video introducing themselves, including a background on their education/training and their work experiences to date. Slides to structure this video are not required but can be very helpful for speakers and audience alike, and you are asked to include subtitles for accessibility purposes.

2) Join a 1 to 1.5 hour Zoom Q&A panel on either Friday November 26 at 11:30 OR Tuesday November 30 at 2:30. The session will take place remotely, and will be facilitated by Dr. Jodi Martin. This panel offers students a chance to ask any questions they have about what it’s like to work in research or how to navigate the post-undergrad world.

If you are interested in joining or learning more about this opportunity, please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. In your email please include a brief description of your educational/training background as well as your current job so Dr. Martin can assess suitability for the panel.

BE the change – Make a donation to toronto Tooth

Have you ever stopped for a second and asked yourself how those who experience homelessness brush their teeth?

Well, the sad truth is that many of them do not. Due to their lack of proper access to basic oral hygiene products or dental care, the homeless community of Toronto have the worst oral health status compared to every other population in the city.

We are TorontoTooth and we intend to change that! As a not-for-profit Agents of Change project we aim to provide oral hygiene products such as toothbrushes and toothpastes to at-risk children, youth, and underprivileged women who are experiencing homelessness in shelters across Toronto.

With a donation of even $1, you can help us provide a person with unstable housing with their most basic human hygiene needs that they deserve but cannot afford. Please visit our website (www.torontotooth.ca<http://www.torontotooth.ca/>) or GoFundMe campaign to donate.

Help us fight against the income-related injustices in oral health. Be the change.

President’s Ambassador Program Now accepting Applications

Designed to provide York students with a unique perspective on the University community, the President’s Ambassador Program offers opportunities for current students to serve as representatives of the University and to share their experiences as York students with fellow students, staff, faculty and alumni. Learn about the engaged student leaders who make up the current and past cohorts<https://www.yorku.ca/president/presidents-ambassadors/> of the President's Ambassador Program.

Applications for the 2021-22 cohort of ambassadors are now available for undergraduate and graduate student leaders who are in their second year of study or higher.

Students selected for the program have previously attended institutional and community events, like the musical Come From Away and the York Circle lecture series, and met with President Lenton to discuss campus issues.

One student who participated in the program said the experience “was a really great way to explore the aspects of the University that we don’t see in the classroom. From research to alumni, to volunteer opportunities, it was so great to see the ways the University makes an impact in the local and global community.”

The responsibilities of a student ambassador are:

  *   Attending a training session at the beginning of each academic term;
  *   Attending a minimum of one event/activity per month, as required;
  *   Serving as a representative of the University;
  *   Attending meetings with President Lenton four times per academic year;
  * Inviting an emerging leader to attend the year-end reception to help inspire a new cohort of potential program participants.

Students who successfully complete the program requirements will receive an honorarium of $250 to thank them for their participation in the program at the end of each of the two semesters, and a letter of recognition from the president.

Additionally UniVenture is partnered with national mental health organizations to help spread the word about the results. UniVenture is designed to deliver specialized workshops to help students learn and develop useful skills for managing challenging situations in the transition to university (eg. academic struggles, emotional distress, substance-related harms), set long-term goals, and channel their unique personality toward achieving those goals. UniVenture is a 5-year, multi-site, controlled study involving first and second year undergraduate students aged between 18 to 25 years at five representatively diverse Canadian university sites (Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, Universite de Montreal, York University, and the University of British Columbia-Okanagan). Who Can Participate? This is an opportunity for eligible 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students to learn more about their unique personality type and to potentially gain new personality-specific skills for goal setting, and for managing challenges, common in the transition to university. How Does It Work? Stage 1 consists of of a baselinecampus wellness survey to gather information about studentsʼ academic success, mental well-being, and experiences with the pandemic. This information may be used by student affairs units to develop and strengthen campus resources, and by the researchers to identify students who are eligible to participate in Stage 2. In Stage 2 eligible students will have the opportunity to participate in two customized UniVenture workshops based on their personality type. These workshops are either face-to-face or online consisting of up to 10 participants, 90 minutes long and led by a trained facilitator. Students who participate are assigned to the workshops or a usual services comparison group will then be invited to complete a 6 month and a 12 month follow up survey to gather the same information as at the baseline. survey. Why Is This Important? Participation in this study will assist researchers in evaluating the success the UniVenture Program has on studentsʼ academic achievement, mental health and substance-related harms. A successful UniVenture Program may influence university policies by helping partners appreciate the effectiveness of a targeted and personalized program. How Will You Be Compensated? Participants will receive a $20 Amazon gift card or 1 SONA credit point for psychology students (if relevant) for completing the Stage 1 baseline survey (45-60 minutes). If eligible to move forward to Stage 2, students will have the opportunity to earn an additional $40 in Amazon gift cards or 2 SONA credit points (if applicable) for completing two more follow-up surveys. If you participate in both follow up surveys, you will be entered in a bonus draw to win a $100 Amazon gift card. Four such draws will take place each term. You made it to the end of the email! We know that there are lots of announcements and information about services being shared with students during this time of year so we’ve attached a resource you may find helpful. Please do not feel pressure to contact the “right” department from the get-go, we are always happy to provide referrals to other campus services and will do our best (with your consent) to ensure your needs are met in an accessible and timely manner.

I’d like to end this email with the encouraging words of our colleagues from the Office of Student Community Relations<https://oscr.students.yorku.ca/kindness>: “This is a semester like no other. As we all adjust to new ways of being around each other, let’s show kindness online and in person as we return to campus this Fall.” – and also, remember to be kind to yourself.

On behalf of SCHW, all the best for a successful, happy, and healthy school year!
