Polishing the Chain – Treaty Relations in toronto Speaker Series

As the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches, the Polishing the Chain – Treaty Relations in Toronto speaker series will launch at York University, exploring the spirit and intent of Toronto treaties, along with settler and Indigenous treaty responsibilities.

Toronto is the traditional territory of the Wendat, Anishnaabeg and Haudenosaunee Confederacies where a web of historical treaties was negotiated and are still relevant today. The speaker series, organized by York University Assistant Professor Martha Stiegman<https://euc.yorku.ca/faculty-profile/stiegman-martha-l/> of the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change with student Tara Chandran, will look at how Indigenous Peoples uphold these treaties and to what extent they are reflected in contemporary Indigenous/state relations.

The series is one small step down a long road toward reconciliation. The upcoming talks will take place via Zoom from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Register here<https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-symbolic-language-of-wampum-diplomacy-tickets-170014775771?aff=ebdssbeac>.

Tuesday, September 28, 2021 – The Symbolic Language of Wampum Diplomacy, co-presented with the Toronto Biennial of Art.

This first talk will feature York University Assistant Professor Alan Corbiere<https://profiles.laps.yorku.ca/profiles/ojiigcor/> of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies and the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History of North America; and Rick Hill, a Tuscarora writer, historian and curator, discussing the Covenant Chain and the visual and metaphoric language of wampum diplomacy. At the 1764 Treaty of Niagara, the British extended their nearly century-old Covenant Chain alliance with the Haudenosaunee to the 24 western nations of the Great Lakes area. Corbiere and Hill will explore the symbolism represented in the belts delivered at Niagara to secure this crucial alliance. Interdisciplinary Kanienkehaka artist Ange Loft, the lead of Jumblies Theatre + Arts’ Talking Treaties project, will look at the ways this visual language is deployed in her current Dish Dances film and A Treaty Guide for Torontonians book, both of which will be featured in the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art.

Next in the series:

October 26, 2021 – Taking care of the Dish: Treaties, Indigenous Law & Environmental Justice

The Black Student Mentorship Program (BSMP) is recruiting Team Members

Now Recruiting for:

  *   Events Committee Volunteers
  *   Social Media Director
  *   Marketing/Promotions Director
  *   Recruitment Coordinators

Candidates from every Faculty of Health department are encouraged to apply.
Please apply through this form: https://forms.gle/EE5nURzRT4KZuL6z7

What is BSMP?

The Black Students Mentorship Program (BSMP) is a brand new student-led initiative at York University supported by Agents of Change. At the helm are students from the Faculty of Health with a mission to address and help remediate the persistent lack of Black representation in the population makeup of graduate students and professionals in health-related graduate studies and professions.

What is the goal?

The goal of BSMP is to establish mentorship and community for Black undergraduate students across the Faculty of Health, connecting them to each other and to Black graduate students, alumni, scholars and professionals in the field of health.

What is the desired outcome?

The desired outcome would be an increase in confidence, access and capacity for Black students, and ultimately an increase in the population of Black graduate students in Faculty of Health programs and Black professionals in various health professions. The added benefit of this outcome will be an increase in diversity in research and innovation streams as we evolve to include the voices, experiences and expertise of Black individuals in academia, scholarship, research and/or professional careers in health.

Student Equity & Diversity Survey – Listening to YU: Be Seen. Be Heard. Take the Census.

Completing the Student Equity & Diversity Census is an important step toward identifying and eliminating barriers to access within York University.

We know that asking about a person’s identity can be uncomfortable, and we will do so with sensitivity. We consulted students and community members when developing the questions so that we were respectful of the varying points of view of our racialized students, Indigenous students, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

By better understanding you – who you are and how you identify – we can provide targeted services, resources and supports to our community’s equity-seeking groups and build a more inclusive community to support the academic success of our students.

  * Step 1: Access the Student Equity & Diversity Census here<https://surveys.yorku.ca/jfe/form/SV_3W4tQdVMA5J5Gmi?DistSRC=web>.
  * Step 2: Log into your Passport York account.
  * Step 3: Complete the Census and opt in for your chance to win an iPad Pro, a $100 Amazon gift card, a $50 Uber Eats gift card or $10 to your YU-Card. To read and understand the contest rules and find more details about the prizes and how to opt in, check out Prizes & Incentives<https://vp.students.yorku.ca/student-census#prizes> below.

Through dramatizations and interviews, award-winning author, poet, and podcast host Rosanna Deerchild<https://www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/bio/rosanna-deerchild> (Cree) guides us through the heroes, battles, triumphs, and traditions which live outside and beyond the national imaginary that we have come to know through our schools and the curriculum. Each week, we will move through one chapter (if you're a fan of graphic novels)/episode (for podcast lovers) of "THIS PLACE: 150 YEARS RETOLD<https://www.cbc.ca/books/thisplace/>" followed by a facilitated discussion. The stories we will cover reflect a rich history of Indigenous resistance and resilience.

You will receive materials/information only for the sessions for which you have registered.

"Indigenous people are this place and it is time we told our stories...The voices of our people are reclaiming and recalling the history that we are. We as storytellers have a responsibility and a gift to tell these stories back into being…We are Kanata…In ‘This Place’, you will learn about amazing pieces of our shared history through interviews with Indigenous authors and illustrators." – Rosanna Deerchild

This partnership involves social science experts, university Student Affairs, student-led organizations, and other partner organizations. Additionally UniVenture is partnered with national mental health organizations to help spread the word about the results. UniVenture is designed to deliver specialized workshops to help students learn and develop useful skills for managing challenging situations in the transition to university (eg. academic struggles, emotional distress, substance-related harms), set long-term goals, and channel their unique personality toward achieving those goals. UniVenture is a 5-year, multi-site, controlled study involving first and second year undergraduate students aged between 18 to 25 years at five representatively diverse Canadian university sites (Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, Universite de Montreal, York University, and the University of British Columbia-Okanagan). Who Can Participate? This is an opportunity for eligible 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students to learn more about their unique personality type and to potentially gain new personality-specific skills for goal setting, and for managing challenges, common in the transition to university. How Does It Work? Stage 1 consists of of a baselinecampus wellness survey to gather information about studentsʼ academic success, mental well-being, and experiences with the pandemic. This information may be used by student affairs units to develop and strengthen campus resources, and by the researchers to identify students who are eligible to participate in Stage 2. In Stage 2 eligible students will have the opportunity to participate in two customized UniVenture workshops based on their personality type. These workshops are either face-to-face or online consisting of up to 10 participants, 90 minutes long and led by a trained facilitator. Students who participate are assigned to the workshops or a usual services comparison group will then be invited to complete a 6 month and a 12 month follow up survey to gather the same information as at the baseline. survey. Why Is This Important? Participation in this study will assist researchers in evaluating the success the UniVenture Program has on studentsʼ academic achievement, mental health and substance-related harms. A successful UniVenture Program may influence university policies by helping partners appreciate the effectiveness of a targeted and personalized program. How Will You Be Compensated? Participants will receive a $20 Amazon gift card or 1 SONA credit point for psychology students (if relevant) for completing the Stage 1 baseline survey (45-60 minutes). If eligible to move forward to Stage 2, students will have the opportunity to earn an additional $40 in Amazon gift cards or 2 SONA credit points (if applicable) for completing two more follow-up surveys. If you participate in both follow up surveys, you will be entered in a bonus draw to win a $100 Amazon gift card. Four such draws will take place each term. You made it to the end of the email! We know that there are lots of announcements and information about services being shared with students during this time of year so we’ve attached a resource you may find helpful. Please do not feel pressure to contact the “right” department from the get-go, we are always happy to provide referrals to other campus services and will do our best (with your consent) to ensure your needs are met in an accessible and timely manner.

I’d like to end this email with the encouraging words of our colleagues from the Office of Student Community Relations<https://oscr.students.yorku.ca/kindness>: “This is a semester like no other. As we all adjust to new ways of being around each other, let’s show kindness online and in person as we return to campus this Fall.” – and also, remember to be kind to yourself.

On behalf of SCHW, all the best for a successful, happy, and healthy school year!
