Bold Ideas: A conversation with Erin Cochrane – Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 4:30pm-6:00pm

Date: Thursday October 14, 2021

Time: 4:30 – 6:00pm

Registration Link: https://tinyurl.com/BOLDIDEASERIN

Registration Deadline: Register at link above for meeting password. Password is emailed 1 hour before start time.

Facilitator: April J. Walker, Student Success Coordinator

Fee: FREE

Event Description:

We have co-evolved alongside our allies in nature; plants, herbs, animals, mushrooms, throughout our existence. Mushrooms are agreed to be one of the oldest recorded living organisms on this planet. After being around for so long, there are a few things we could learn from their wisdom.

Humans are now consciously evolving at an exponential rate. But what often happens during evolutions or transformations, are series of breakdowns, breakthroughs and leaving old ways behind. Erin shares her experiences with loss and grief, exploration of unconventional ways of living, and healing through community and the teachings of fungi. She looks into what challenging normative systems and learning from and modelling “modern life” after intentional communities, and the fungal queendom could be like. And our opportunity through radical vulnerability and authenticity to achieve higher service to ourselves and others.

Student Equity & Diversity Survey – Listening to YU: Be Seen. Be Heard. Take the Census.

Completing the Student Equity & Diversity Census is an important step toward identifying and eliminating barriers to access within York University.

We know that asking about a person’s identity can be uncomfortable, and we will do so with sensitivity. We consulted students and community members when developing the questions so that we were respectful of the varying points of view of our racialized students, Indigenous students, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

By better understanding you – who you are and how you identify – we can provide targeted services, resources and supports to our community’s equity-seeking groups and build a more inclusive community to support the academic success of our students.

  • Step 1: Access the Student Equity & Diversity Census here.
  • Step 2: Log into your Passport York account.
  • Step 3: Complete the Census and opt in for your chance to win an iPad Pro, a $100 Amazon gift card, a $50 Uber Eats gift card or $10 to your YU-Card. To read and understand the contest rules and find more details about the prizes and how to opt in, check out Prizes & Incentives below.

You made it to the end of the email! We know that there are lots of announcements and information about services being shared with students during this time of year so we’ve attached a resource you may find helpful. Please do not feel pressure to contact the “right” department from the get-go, we are always happy to provide referrals to other campus services and will do our best (with your consent) to ensure your needs are met in an accessible and timely manner.

I’d like to end this email with the encouraging words of our colleagues from the
Office of Student Community Relations: “This is a semester like no other. As we all adjust to new ways of being around each other, let’s show kindness online and in person as we return to campus this Fall.” – and also, remember to be kind to yourself.

On behalf of SCHW, all the best for a successful, happy, and healthy school year!
