Art can be discovered in all mediums, shapes and forms - paintings, photography, movies, fashion, nature, everyday life, etc. But what specific elements of art can we find? In this monthly series, we will come together and engage in a meaningful discussion to determine why the artist features certain elements in their work, what they evoke, and what they mean.

During this session, we will be using the elements and principles of design to analyze horror movies. Featuring iconic scenes and stills from best-picture movies or classic films like Bride of Frankenstein, Coraline, Monster House, Scream, Jennifer's Body, IT, and Paranormal Activity, we will dissect the elements of horror as they relate to art.

Please join us if you would like to experience a fruitful session of learning, exploration, discovery, and delight with your fellow peers. Take a break, decompress, and partake in this spooky, educational workshop! *Warning: there will be spoilers for these movies*

Disrupting the Status Quo: Reimagining Student Leadership is panel event that will highlight the lessons learned, challenges, and future directions gained from the past six years of student leadership and student-led programs at Calumet and Stong Colleges. The panelists will consist of faculty, staff, alumni, fellows, and peer leaders past and present who will share first-hand their leadership experiences.

We invite our Calumet and Stong Colleges Community, including students, peer leaders, staff, faculty, and alumni, as well as our University partners for their feedback and insight regarding our programs, what has been learned, and how we can move forward with strengthening our initiatives.  It is also an opportunity for the larger York University community to network and hopefully find new peer leader and student success synergies.

UPSA Podcast season 2, episode 3: Mental health in an unequal world

Visit tinyurl.com/S2E3withEWIHandGHSA to listen to the whole episode!

This year, for World Mental Health Day, the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) selected the theme “Mental Health in an Unequal World.” This particular theme was selected to highlight the various disparities that exist in our world when it comes to accessing mental health and how various marginalized populations face elevated risks in mental health. Why do certain groups face disproportionate rates of mental health conditions?

In this episode of What’s UP(SA)?, we have partnered with our friends Farwa and Asma from the Global Health Students’ Association (GHSA) and Tatiana and Fiona from the Empowering Women in Health (EWIH) to discuss the factors behind good mental health, how various marginalized groups face a disproportionate level of mental health issues and how to maintain your mental health in the midst of the pandemic!

Bri Darboh received her Honours BA in Psychology from York University in 2015. YORK UNIVERSITY PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC: FAll 2021 Mediation Programs

Opening Up to Post Pandemic Life and Liberty with Mindfulness

In this 8-week mindfulness course, we will learn about the science and tradition that celebrates alone-ness as a way of enriching relationships and daily life. Mindfulness practice, especially Loving Kindness Meditation, integrates a respectfully kind relationship with ourselves with respectfully kind relationships with others.

Time: 5:30 - 7:00 pm

Represent the Faculty of Health in the 2021 Student Census - Deadline Friday, October 29, 2021

In September, York University launched the Student Equity & Diversity Census, a voluntary self-identification census that was created in response to feedback from students asking for a means to help identify barriers to accessing services. We encourage all HH students to participate in this important initiative to ensure the diverse needs and experiences of students are represented across the University; that includes you!

Why should you participate?

Representation matters.

Representation is essential to ensure student services can better meet your needs. All York undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to participate.

Students are key drivers of positive change.

Your answers will help teach the University about your needs and the needs of your communities which will help to shape and enhance support services and resources. The five minutes you’ll spend completing this short census will lead to a much bigger impact on our community.

You can win prizes!

York is offering incentives and prizes to complete the survey. You could win Amazon and Uber Eats gift cards, YU-Card flex dollars and an iPad Pro.

You can find the Census here. It will be available until October 29, 2021.

For more information, FAQs, and details, visit the Student Equity & Diversity Census Website

[log in to unmask]" id="x_Picture_x0020_21" alt="STUDENT EQUITY & DIVERSITY SURVEY – Listening to YU: Be Seen. Be Heard. Take the Census. Completing the Student Equity & Diversity Census is an important step toward identifying and eliminating barriers to access within York University. We know that asking about a person’s identity can be uncomfortable, and we will do so with sensitivity. We consulted students and community members when developing the questions so that we were respectful of the varying points of view of our racialized students, Indigenous students, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community. By better understanding you – who you are and how you identify – we can provide targeted services, resources and supports to our community’s equity-seeking groups and build a more inclusive community to support the academic success of our students. • Step 1: Access the Student Equity & Diversity Census here. • Step 2: Log into your Passport York account. • Step 3: Complete the Census and opt in for your chance to win an iPad Pro, a $100 Amazon gift card, a $50 Uber Eats gift card or $10 to your YU-Card. Lingua Franca Mentorship Program: Apply to Become a Mentee – Application Deadline November 12, 2021 at 11:59pm

Lingua Franca is a non-profit organization funded by the Agents of Change program under the Calumet and Stong Colleges. Lingua Franca aims to provide a platform for ESL students to enhance their communication and public speaking skills along with a space to practice their leadership skills.

Our Mentorship Program aims to provide peer-to-peer support to ESL students through consistent work sessions and workshops as they continuously build a short presentation aiming to decrease speech anxiety in terms of public speaking/presentation. Mentees will be assigned a Mentor (based on matching interests) who will guide them throughout the year with constant communication and a bundle of resources. They will be formed in groups of 2-3 students (maximum 5) to create a group network, develop leadership, and build a community. Mentees will be able to present their presentation during our Lingua Franca Summit happening on March 2021.

What you can gain from this as a mentee:
- a space where you can freely enhance your English communication skills with continued support from the team
- an opportunity to develop your leadership skills by working as a group
- a chance to be recognized at the end of the year for your participation and improvement within the program
- an opportunity to build relationships/network and to get involved within the York community

Mentee applications will close on November 12th, Friday at 11:59 PM. To learn more, please contact us through our Instagram @ linguafrancayu.

Student counselling, health & well-being is here for you

Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being (SCHW) and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! For those of you who are hearing about SCHW for the first time, we are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University. As a new academic year begins, we wanted to take a moment to let you know about us and the FREE services and supports that are available to you this year.

Peer-led Workshops
Our team of peer health educators offer workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here:

Individual Counselling
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297 to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

·         LGBTQ2S+ Support Group

·         Racialized Students Support Group

·         Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Violence (in partnership with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education)

·         Virtual Trauma-Informed Yoga Group

·         Gay Men’s Process Group

·         Grief & Loss Group
