IMMEDIATE ACTION: REminder to upload proof of vaccination

If you are seeking access to campus in January 2022, you must provide proof of vaccination onYU Screen. This includes accessing campus to take in-person classes, study, work, attend events, utilize student services, live on campus and more.

Students registered for in-person courses for the Winter 2022 term who do not provide proof of vaccination on YU Screen by December 1, 2021, will be de-enrolled prior to the start of the term.

Due to high demands and long waitlists for certain courses, re-enrolment is highly unlikely for those who become compliant with York University’s vaccination mandate after December 1, 2021. Act now to remain enrolled in in-person courses for Winter 2022.

Rapid Antigen Testing Program

York University has offered a free testing program to community members on both campuses. Rapid antigen testing allows the University to proactively identify cases of COVID-19 that may have otherwise been missed, helping to reduce the spread of the virus while supporting community health and safety.  To make rapid testing even easier and more convenient for the York community, we are pleased to announce that York is launching an at-home rapid antigen testing program.

York University Memorial Ceremony: December 6, 2021

Join us as we honour those we have lost and reflect on renewing our commitment to take action on ending gender-based violence. Now more than ever, we need to come together as a community and take action to support those who are experiencing violence and refer them to appropriate services. It is our hope that the events we have planned will not only honour those who we have lost, but help enable our community to take action and support those who require our help today.

National Day of Remembrance Virtual Memorial Ceremony
When: Monday, Dec. 6, 2021
Time: 11 a.m.
Where: YouTube livestream link will be available to watch on this page.

This event has been made possible through the kind collaboration between the Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education (The Centre), the York Federation of Students, the Community Safety Department, the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion, the Centre for Aboriginal Student Services, Glendon College Student Union, Student Counselling, Health & Well-being and the Lassonde School of Engineering.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence: November 25 to December 10, 2021

This year, the global theme for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is “Orange the world: End violence against women now!”. In support of this civil society initiative, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) calls for global actions to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations. The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education is partnering with McMaster University, Nipissing University, Queens University and University of Ottawa to collaboratively host events across institutions during the 16 days. Not only will you be helping your fellow student peers, but you will be paid to do it.  Best feature of all, the role is flexible so can choose how many hours a week you want to work.  To apply, click on the link below to complete the interest form.

You are invited to register for our upcoming Foundational Peer Leadership Training (FPLT).

About FPLT

Students attending this training will explore the following topics:

  2. They Matter - Reflect on and discuss questions such as what does leadership mean to you? What are the characteristics and traits of a "good" leader? and, how can we systematically and empathetically meet and address the needs of your mentees and other students?
  3. Communication Matters - Have you ever been nervous when communicating with others? You are not the only one. Verbal and written communication with peers, professors, colleagues, and students, is an inherent part of being a peer leader. Learn about to use communication skills more effectively in both an in-person and virtual environment.
  4. Community Matters - A sense of connectedness and belonging are critical to our health and wellbeing. Discuss and identify how you can build safe and welcoming spaces and promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and citizenship. Learn from others as they share stories of community and identity.

Eligibility

This training is mandatory for all peer leaders affiliated with Calumet and Stong Colleges (both paid and volunteer roles). If you are interested in a peer leadership position and/or want to develop your leadership skills, we invite you to register.

UniVenture is designed to deliver specialized workshops to help students learn and develop useful skills for managing challenging situations in the transition to university (eg. academic struggles, emotional distress, substance-related harms), set long-term goals, and channel their unique personality toward achieving those goals.  UniVenture is a 5-year, multi-site, controlled study involving first and second year undergraduate students aged between 18 to 25 years at five representatively diverse Canadian university sites (Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, Universite de Montreal, York University, and the University of British Columbia-Okanagan).

Who Can Participate?  This is an opportunity for eligible 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students to learn more about their unique personality type and to potentially gain new personality-specific skills for goal setting, and for managing challenges, common in the transition to university.

How Does It Work? Stage 1 consists of of a baselinecampus wellness survey to gather information about studentsʼ academic success, mental well-being, and experiences with the pandemic. This information may be used by student affairs units to develop and strengthen campus resources, and by the researchers to identify students who are eligible to participate in Stage 2. In Stage 2 eligible students will have the opportunity to participate in two customized UniVenture workshops based on their personality type. These workshops are either face-to-face or online consisting of up to 10 participants, 90 minutes long and led by a trained facilitator. Students who participate are assigned to the workshops or a usual services comparison group will then be invited to complete a 6 month and a 12 month follow up survey to gather the same information as at the baseline.

survey.

Why Is This Important? Participation in this study will assist researchers in evaluating the success the UniVenture Program has on studentsʼ academic achievement, mental health and substance-related harms. A successful UniVenture Program may influence university policies by helping partners appreciate the effectiveness of a targeted and personalized program.

How Will You Be Compensated? Participants will receive a $20 Amazon gift card or 1 SONA credit point for psychology students (if relevant) for completing the Stage 1 baseline survey (45-60 minutes). If eligible to move forward to Stage 2, students will have the opportunity to earn an additional $40 in Amazon gift cards or 2 SONA credit points (if applicable) for completing two more follow-up surveys. If you participate in both follow up surveys, you will be entered in a bonus draw to win a $100 Amazon gift card. Four such draws will take place each term.

Student counselling, health & well-being is here for you

Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being (SCHW) and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! For those of you who are hearing about SCHW for the first time, we are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University. As a new academic year begins, we wanted to take a moment to let you know about us and the FREE services and supports that are available to you this year.

Peer-led Workshops
Our team of peer health educators offer workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here:
https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/workshops

Individual Counselling
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297 to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

·        LGBTQ2S+ Support Group

·        Racialized Students Support Group

·        Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Violence (in partnership with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education)

·        Virtual Trauma-Informed Yoga Group

·        Gay Men’s Process Group

·        Grief & Loss Group

To learn more about each group and/or how to connect, please visit:

Racialized Students Support Group

The Racialized Students Support Group will resume in January 2022. If you are interested in attending, please refer to this link for more details about this group and how to join: https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/racialized-students-support-group

SCHW’s Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

Join our monthly online group to meet other York students navigating gender in a relaxed and safe space.  Our group is facilitated by Jay Jonah, a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folxs. This group is a space to share as much or as little as you want.  Ask questions, just listen in, or chat and make some new friends! Open to all trans, non-binary, gender-non-conforming folxs, and those who are questioning their gender.

Next meeting: January 26, 2022 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. EST on Zoom

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here.

Note: The prompt will ask you to sign-in. Please sign-in with your entire York U Passport York credentials, e.g. [log in to unmask]. *However, if you have an email ending @my.yorku.ca, please replace that with @yorku.ca to access the application.
