Global Health Challenges in Times of COVID-19 Webinar series

The geopolitics of the health effects of sanctions in Syria
February 18, 1:10 PM – 2:30 PM[i]

Description

This webinar will address the health effects of sanctions on the people of Syria and the geopolitical context. Syria is one of 21 countries currently subject to economic sanctions by Canada and one of about 40 countries under US sanctions. For about three decades Western countries have increasingly used economic sanctions as a foreign policy instrument. Deployed alone or in conjunction with military and/or diplomatic interventions, sanctions aim to achieve strategic political and policy goals, such as ostensibly protecting individuals and states from the behaviour of alleged wrongdoers. Because economic sanctions are considered less violent than direct military assault, they are often supported by individuals on the left and in the peace movement, who reluctantly accept the policy as a necessary evil. However, it is well-established that economic sanctions have a significant impact on human health, generally the health of vulnerable groups – women, children, the older and the sicker. The webinar is generously sponsored by the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research.
