Bold Ideas is a platform for citizens, activists and leaders to share their personal, career and life experiences and challenges with the community, and how they negotiated their life paths around these challenges. Join us on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022 from 6:00-7:30pm for a Bold Ideas session by E.L. Adams II entitled Hope for my Hippocampus: Black Mental Health between the US/Canadian Border 

 

E.L. Adams II graduated from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee with a master’s degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology. E. L. created programs based on his thesis to combine music and mental health, and to allow for deep and safe conversations. E. L. has supported adolescents, families, school boards and communities with mental health and encouraging others to get the support that they need to develop, grow and manage their well-being. In our Bold Ideas discussion, E.L. will discuss some of his experiences on both sides of the American and Canadian border. Given that the hippocampus plays a major role in learning and memory, E.L. hopes to share his unique account of a black experience from what is embedded in his hippocampus: the things he has learned and remembered that have had an impact on his own mental health. E.L.’s daily occurrences have shown him that there are more similarities than differences between the U.S. and Canadian borders when it comes to racism. Through his presentation, E.L. hopes to highlight how he has managed to preserve his peace and to continue functioning at an optimal level with hope that new memories can be created that include acceptance and value of a Black man.

Topics that will be covered include the roles of forensic nurses, how to recognize the signs and communicate with victims of human trafficking, communication strategies used to implement trauma-informed care, and the ways in which we can support victims in accessing care following events of sexual violence and domestic abuse.

This workshop is intended to prepare students for an interview. It will include a brief online presentation on the principles of an interview, the different types of questions to be asked, and a structured outline on how to effectively answer questions. Peer leaders will provide their answer as an example for a good answer, Lastly, students will be broken up into smaller groups to go over the questions discussed for practice.
This workshop is designed to help students interview for jobs, volunteer positions, professional schools and graduate studies (e.g. medical, dental, law schools).

Learning Commons: Student Guide to Group Work

 

The Student Guide to Group Work is a multimodal eLearning resource is designed to help students learn the fundamentals of group work, through four short videos and a variety of downloadable tools and resources. This guide, offered under a Creative Commons license, was funded by an AIF grant, and is a collaborative endeavour involving the Libraries, the Writing Department, Learning Skills Services, the ESL Open Learning Centre, the Teaching Commons and the Career Centre.

If you are thinking about getting involved at York and/or you want to build on your leadership skills, then this training is for you.  We want to introduce you to the culture of peer leadership at Calumet and Stong Colleges and at York University.  We have developed a highly interactive program where you will explore topics with your peers in small and large groups.  Students attending this training will complete the following three modules: 

  1. YU Matter and Belong -learn about the importance of a sense of mattering and dig deeper into topics such as resiliency, grit, and growth mindset.
  2. YU Thrive and Flourish - reflect on your self-care strategies and learn about the importance of managing stress. Emotional intelligence and self-compassion will also be discussed as ways to help you thrive and flourish.   
  3. Fostering a Leadership Community - explore elements and benefits of peer leadership and student engagement and how you can get involved in our leadership community. 

What we need from you 

A. To receive a certificate of participation, you will be required to meet the following 4 program requirements:  

  1. participate in the full training (participants are asked to arrive on time and stay until the training ends)
  2. have access to a webcam, mic, and internet.  You will be asked to keep your camera on and participate in the live small and large group discussions
  3.  complete all pre-instructional activities, prior to the scheduled training, (2-hour commitment prior to the training) using the eClass platform 
  4. complete all post-training activities (1-hour commitment after the training)

Foundational Peer Leadership (FPLT) – May 3, 4, & 6, 2022

 

You are invited to register for our upcoming Foundational Peer Leadership Training (FPLT).  

 

About FPLT

This training offers current students and peer leaders a unique opportunity to learn and reflect on how to take on leadership responsibilities, what it means to be a leader in their community, and how to maintain a balance in their lives. 

 

Students attending this training will explore the following topics:  

  1. You Matter - Leadership is not only about THEM (mentees), but also about YOU.  Learn about how to maintain your health and wellness so that you can maximize both your potential and the potential of those around you.  
  2. They Matter - Reflect on and discuss questions such as what does leadership mean to you? What are the characteristics and traits of a "good" leader? and how can we systematically and compassionately meet and address the needs of your mentees and other students?  
  3. Communication Matters - Have you ever been nervous when communicating with others? You are not the only one. Verbal and written communication with peers, professors, colleagues, and students, is an inherent part of being a peer leader. Learn about to use communication skills more effectively in both an in-person and virtual environment. 

 

Eligibility 

This training is mandatory for all peer leaders affiliated with Calumet and Stong Colleges (both paid and volunteer roles). If you are interested in a peer leadership position and/or want to develop your leadership skills, we invite you to register.  

 

Program Requirements

5. complete all mandatory post-training activities (30-minute commitment after the training) using the eClass platform

About FPLT This training offers current students and peer leaders a unique opportunity to learn and reflect on how to take on leadership responsibilities, what it means to be a leader in their community, and how to maintain a balance in their lives. Students attending this training will explore the following topics: 1. You Matter - Leadership is not only about THEM (mentees), but also about YOU. Learn about how to maintain your health and wellness so that you can maximize both your potential and the potential of those around you. 2. They Matter - Reflect on and discuss questions such as what does leadership mean to you? What are the characteristics and traits of a "good" leader? and how can we systematically and compassionately meet and address the needs of your mentees and other students? 3. Communication Matters - Have you ever been nervous when communicating with others? You are not the only one. Verbal and written communication with peers, professors, colleagues, and students, is an inherent part of being a peer leader. Learn about to use communication skills more effectively in both an in-person and virtual environment. Eligibility This training is mandatory for all peer leaders affiliated with Calumet and Stong Colleges (both paid and volunteer roles). If you are interested in a peer leadership position and/or want to develop your leadership skills, we invite you to register. Program Requirements To receive a certificate of participation, you will be required to meet the following 5 program requirements: 1. participate in the full training (participants are asked to arrive on time and stay until the training ends) 2. have access to a webcam, mic, and internet for remote portions of the training. Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being (SCHW) and welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! For those of you who are hearing about SCHW for the first time, we are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University. As a new academic year begins, we wanted to take a moment to let you know about us and the FREE services and supports that are available to you this year.


Peer-led Workshops 
Our team of peer health educators offer workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here:

Individual Counselling 
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply call our reception line at (416)-736-5297 to connect with a counsellor for support. During your session, your counsellor will develop a goal with you, and help you move closer towards personal success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support 
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than or in addition to meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2021-2022:

Racialized Students Support Group

SCHW’s Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

Join our monthly online group to meet other York students navigating gender in a relaxed and safe space.  Our group is facilitated by Jay Jonah, a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folxs. This group is a space to share as much or as little as you want.  Ask questions, just listen in, or chat and make some new friends! Open to all trans, non-binary, gender-non-conforming folxs, and those who are questioning their gender.

 

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here.
