Call for Applications – 2022 Seed Grants for Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health Research
The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research is accepting applications for the 2022 Seed Grants for Critical Social Science Perspectives in Global Health Research.
Five seed grants worth up to $5,000 CAD each will be awarded to York faculty undertaking projects that contribute to one or more of the Institute’s
three themes: planetary health; global health and humanitarianism; and global health foresighting. York graduate students and research fellows are welcome to apply with the support of a York faculty member as the principal investigator.
Experts from Canada, Germany, and Brazil Discuss One Health Approaches
On Feb. 23, more than 45 researchers, academics, and professionals from the public and private sectors attended the Dahdaleh Institute and Global 1 Health Network panel
discussion on
One Health Governance Approaches to Shared Global Health Threats. Raphael Aguiar
highlighted political ecology as an approach to support One Health engagements and how an urban political ecology lens can be mobilized in global health research and practice to inform and guide state-led responses across the globe. Three insightful
presentations from leading experts Steven Hoffman, Mayumi Duarte Wakimoto, and
Wolfram Morgenroth-Klein addressed One Health approaches in Canada, Brazil, and Germany, respectively, followed by an engaging and thought-provoking 30-minute Q&A period.
The event was moderated by the Dahdaleh Institute (acting) director Dr.
Mary Wiktorowicz.
Prof. Saptarishi Badhopadhyay’s new book—All Is Well: Catastrophe and the Making of the Normal State—is the first book to conceptualize “disaster
management” as an active historical and global struggle that creates disasters and political authorities.
The book brings together social sciences research with legal and environmental history, and postcolonial international law analysis, challenging the mainstream belief that the
causes of disaster can be rationally distinguished from solutions.
Climate Change Research Month – York Research Centres Host Events, Films, and Panels
This March, York University will celebrate the first-ever Climate Change Research Month with more than a dozen events, films, and panels aimed at generating awareness
of climate change research and mobilizing the University community to take action. The events will be hosted by York’s Organized Research Units (ORUs), and will demonstrate how climate change impacts every facet of life—including child development, mental
health, faith, employment, equity, and the economy.
The Dahdaleh Institute is hosting a special seminar on modelling planetary health featuring
Byomkesh Talukder, planetary health fellow, on Wednesday, March 9 at 10 a.m.
World Water Day: A Solutions-Driven Workshop on Climate Impacts on Freshwater
The impacts of climate change and ecosystem degradation are experienced by local communities regionally and around the world. These experiences are exacerbated by underlying
social inequities. World
Water Day is an opportunity to contextualize research that sheds light on these experiences against the backdrop of global efforts to boost ambition on adaptation action and strengthening inter-regional and cross-boundary adaptation to the impacts of planetary
stressors—e.g., food systems, water, agriculture and fisheries, and energy—with special focus on human and environmental health.
As part of CIFAL
York’s In-Focus Knowledge Exchange Series for Climate, Nature, and People, this one-day event held on World Water Day (Tuesday March 22, 2022) will have presentations from convenors Drs. Sapna Sharma and Idil Boran and
a keynote address from Dr. James Orbinski. The Dahdaleh Institute’s Global Health and Humanitarianism Fellow Dr. Syed Imran Ali (and many others) will engage in discussions on the science
and governance of freshwater, including human and environmental health; local actors and communities; and engineering scientific solutions.
Study Abroad Opportunity – Summer 2022 in Costa Rica at York's Las Nubes EcoCampus
Don't miss the unique opportunity to earn credits through courses taught by York faculty in Costa Rica. The courses take a community-based approach by developing collaborative
projects that provide learning opportunities with an emphasis on experiential education, building on our long-standing relationships with diverse communities and groups in Southern Costa Rica, including women’s organizations, agricultural cooperatives and
producers, environmental protection and social justice groups, and Indigenous communities.
Information sessions will be held on March 8 and 18. These sessions present an overview of our EcoCampus in Costa Rica, the costs, requirements, courses, and an opportunity
to meet some of the instructors.
