CAREER SPOTLIGHT: ABIGAEL PAMINTUAN, UX DESIGNER AT AUTODESK – Thursday, September 22, 2022 @ 6:30pm EDT

Are you a Faculty of Health student curious about where your degree can take you? Career Spotlight is an opportunity where you can connect with Faculty of Health alumni and learn about their career. This session’s spotlight speaker is Abigael Pamintuan

Abigael Pamintuan is a Global Health alumna (2019) who specialized in Electronic Health (eHealth). During her undergraduate studies, Abigael became involved in the Faculty of Health as a Student Health Ambassador at York (SHAY) and as a Peer Mentor. Abigael also started a Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research chapter at York with her friends and peers. Through her eHealth courses, Abigael was inspired by learning about how technologies could impact health at the individual, community, and global level and so pursued a Master of Information with a specialization in User Experience (UX) Design at the University of Toronto. Abigael now works as a UX Designer at Autodesk working on ShotGrid, a production management tool predominantly used by studios in the film and entertainment industry. Although Abigael currently does not work in the health space, Abigael believes that the education she received at York provided her with a solid foundation in empathy and understanding, qualitative research, critical thinking, and visual and verbal communication skills - all things required in her work today. In the future, Abigael wants to pursue UX in other industries and mentor others interested in health and design. Outside of work, Abigael loves to learn about interior design, travel and sample local cuisines, and find cafes serving chais and cortados.

New season of What’s UP(SA)? Podcast!

Beginning your university life at York can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. There’s a big learning curve to adapt to, especially now that we are transitioning back to in-person classes. It can be very overwhelming for first year students, who also have no knowledge of university courses and how to be a successful student. But don’t worry! In this episode of What’s UP(SA)?, host Aleksija talks about the basics on how to succeed in university with guest speakers Christina and Zahra. They share tips and advice about going back to school, like important supplies, self-care, and scheduling tips, as well as goal setting and completing goals, including how to stay motivated and how to avoid burnout. The transition from online to in-person classes is also discussed, since being back in a physical classroom is different but also a great opportunity to enhance your learning experience.

Visit https://tinyurl.com/UPSAS3E1 to listen to our new podcast episode. Learn more about the tips we shared by visiting the UPSA website<https://sites.google.com/view/upsayorku/podcast?authuser=0>

STUDENT COUNSELLING, HEALTH & WELL-BEING IS HERE FOR YOU

Hello from Student Counselling, Health & Well-being<about:blank> (SCHW)! We are a department in the Division of Students that supports the mental health and well-being of students at York University.

We wanted to take a moment to let you know about the FREE services and supports we offer.

Peer-led Workshops
Our team of peer health educators host workshops on a variety of well-being topics including Mental Health 101, Nutrition Basics, Sleep for Better Grades, Healthier Coping Strategies, Self-Care, and much more. To see what is offered and to sign-up for a workshop, take a look here: https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/workshops<about:blank>

Individual Counselling
SCHW offers same-day and appointment-based counselling in a safe and non-judgemental space. University life can be challenging, and our team of counsellors are here to help you feel heard and understood. Simply book online for our walk-in services here. The online booking system opens every morning at 8:45 a.m. EST for same-day booking. Please check back in the system throughout the day. Spots may open as other students cancel. Student preferences regarding counsellor identities (e.g. BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, etc.) will be considered for ongoing counselling/short-term therapy. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, our services are confidential and no problem is too small. We are here for you!

Group Support
Some students may prefer to meet with peers for encouragement and support rather than – or in addition to – meeting with a counsellor one-to-one. If group support is something that interests you, you’re in luck! SCHW will be offering the following groups (all of which are facilitated or co-facilitated by counsellors) during 2022:

· LGBTQ2S+ Support Group

o A bi-weekly support group open to York’s LGBTQ2S+ students, hosted by SCHW counsellors who identify as part of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

· Process Group

o A weekly group led by a SCHW counsellor with a variety of discussion topics that change each session based on student needs. Sessions are held on Mondays and Tuesdays.

· Racialized Students Support Group

o A monthly group hosted by racialized counsellors that provides a safe space for BIPOC students to reflect on their identities and experiences.

· Support Group for Survivors of Sexual Violence

o A weekly support group for survivors of sexual violence co-facilitated with The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education.

· Gay Men’s Process Group

o A weekly group committed to discussing issues related to the gay men and/or queer men community.

· Grief & Loss Support Group

o A safe and secure group where participants can process grief and find validation in a space focused on providing hope and support. Entry into this group is offered through referral from SCHW counsellors during individual appointments.

· Monthly Trans and Non-binary Support Group

o A group facilitated by a trans-masculine social worker who specializes in supporting trans and non-binary folx wishing to navigate gender.

To learn more about each group and/or how to connect, please visit:

https://counselling.students.yorku.ca/group-counselling-schw<about:blank>

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Certification

SCHW is continuing to offer licences for ‘LivingWorks Start’ to the York U community. In just one hour online, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. We will be giving out licences every month, so add your name here<about:blank>.

Note: The prompt will ask you to sign-in. Please sign-in with your entire York U Passport York credentials, e.g. [log in to unmask]<about:blank>. *However, if you have an email ending @my.yorku.ca, please replace that with @yorku.ca to access the application. SCHW continues to partner with York International to offer all York students, located anywhere globally free, 24/7 access to counselling and mental health supports through KeepMeSafe. Topics addressed through supports include managing stress due to financial challenges, dealing with feeling lonely or homesick, facing tensions at home, harbouring suicidal tendencies, adjusting to life in Canada, and more. KeepMeSafe offers online resources and supports as well as a phone line to connect students to a mental health professional in their local region. You can access resources and connect with a counsellor through the MySSP app or by calling the toll-free number through the website below:
