The Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages at York University presents… Amplifying Indigenous Voices in Dementia Caregivers Don Davies Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Biology CIKL Research Associate Monday, Oct 17, 7-8:30PM (Virtual) The Canadian Indigenous population has an increased prevalence and earlier onset of dementia than the Canadian non-Indigenous population. Dementia is an umbrella term for chronic and progressive conditions of deterioration in cognitive function which affects daily functioning. Unpaid dementia caregivers are usually adult children, spouses, or other family members and friends. We are interviewing unpaid Métis dementia caregivers to identify the available services for people with dementia in the Métis population. We will also identify the amount of support that caregivers of Métis seniors with dementia need to live well, and to identify how caregivers engage in self care for themselves. We will implement the results for knowledge translation and influencing policy development to identify strategies that help ease burdens associated with Métis dementia caregiving. ABOUT DON: Dr. Don Davies (he/him) is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at York University. He is a proud member of the Manitoba Métis Federation. He attended many cultural events, seminars, and conferences at the Manitoba Métis Federation. He was always fascinated by the health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians in numerous health conditions. This has and continues to drive his scientific interests. The Canadian Indigenous population has an increased prevalence and earlier onset of Alzheimer’s disease than the Canadian non-Indigenous population. He has established a research program studying Alzheimer’s disease within the Indigenous community. His program involves interviewing unpaid dementia caregivers who are usually adult children, spouses, or other family members and friends.
