In time for Remembrance Day, the Archives of Ontario (AO) is pleased to share that it has uploaded of 129 images from its Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) photograph
albums (C 224-8) to the Wikimedia Commons. The images depict the experiences of Canadian soldiers during the First World War, notably at Vimy Ridge, the Somme, and Ypres, and can be found here:
The AO has been uploading material from its collection to the Commons since June 2020. What began as pandemic project has become a vital means of connecting with
researchers and reaching new audiences. The AO has now uploaded roughly 4,000 high-resolution images to the Commons as part of its GLAM-Wiki project. All of these images are either already in the public domain or have been uploaded under an Open Government
License, meaning they can be freely downloaded and used.
The CEF photograph albums join previous uploads of war posters from the Archives of Ontario poster collection (C 233) and images of the General Engineering Company (Canada) Limited
(F 2082), or GECO, as easily accessible primary resources related to Canada’s experiences with war in the 20th century. It is the AO’s hope that this material will be used by
teachers, students, and anyone curious about this history.

GECO was a munitions plant that was staffed predominantly by women. It had a couple of locations, one of which was near the corner of Warden and Eglinton Streets in Toronto.
