I just heard some very sad news. Barkley Rosser, Jr. passed away on January 10, 2023. The death was caused by an infection that led to heart valve failure. I'm still absorbing the news. He was a dear friend. I enjoyed working with him and Dave Colander on several projects.

Barkley was Barkley to the very end. On January 6,  a few days before he passed away, he made a post about Herb Gintis's death on Facebook. He will be sorely missed.

I have just learned that Herb Gintis has died at 82. I had actually been hoping to run into him annual economics meetings, that started today in New Orleans, although I am not there due to illness (not covid). He was one of the most iconoclastic and innovative behavioral researchers who worked across many disciplines. Identified as a leader of the New Left in the 1960s,, coauthoring frequently with Sam Bowles. His politics became hard to pin down after the 1980s, with him never fearing to challenge anybody. I had many links with, both of us into complexity and the Santa Fe Institute. But I shall note on personal item. I am the founding editor of the Review of Behavioral Economics. In its second volume in 2015 I published a "target article" by him and Dirk Helbing entitled, "Homo Socialis: An Analytical Core for Sociological Theory." This was followed by papers commenting on it, an incomplete list of authors being Catherine Eckel, Jane Sell, Mauro Gallegati, Alan Isaac, Paul Lewis, Paul Ormerod, Vernon Smith, Ulrich Witt, David Wolpert. I will miss him.
