Canada should invest the amount necessary to enable all Canadians to have access to the journals and peer reviewed research that is available to academics. Access to knowledge surely influences health. Access to pertinent peer reviewed information is important. Even credible organizations-for example DoctorsNS - sometimes avoid sharing peer reviewed ideas and data that they believe is not consistent with their institutional policies. The result is that many people don't know who to believe, and without access to credible information and research they cannot easily mediate between opposing views. Years ago one of my graduate students found that even when people know what questions to ask the search engines may deliver commercial answers, and that the most useful answers were hidden behind paywalls.
