Dear student,

My name is Rebecca Sarchese, and I am a fourth-year student at Glendon Campus of York University who is currently conducting research on the preferences of York University’s Disability community regarding the use of person-first and identity-first language in English. I have included definitions of each term below:

  • Person-first Language: Language used to describe members of the Disability community in which the person is mentioned before their disability (e.g., person with a disability)

  • Identity-first Language: Language used to describe members of the Disability community that utilizes their disabilities as adjectives (e.g., disabled person)

Through this study, we aim to obtain a general picture of how York University’s Disability community prefers to describe themselves. We hope that this will inform York University’s use of person- and/or identity-first language on their website, in their courses, publications, etc. to describe the Disability community.

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be a student at York University aged 17 or older who identifies as being disabled or as having a disability, whether professionally or self diagnosed. This includes students who are enrolled in part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate studies, certificate programs, and/or continuing education programs or courses.

If you meet the eligibility criteria and wish to participate in our study, please click here to complete the survey. The survey will take you approximately 10 minutes to complete. After submission, you will also get a chance to enter a draw to win one of three $50.00 prizes. Participation in the draw is entirely optional (i.e., You do not need to participate in the draw to participate in the survey).

This study is entirely voluntary and you may decline to participate at any time before submitting said survey. However, due to the anonymous nature of the study, once you submit your survey, this cannot be reversed as our research team will be unable to identify which survey is yours.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have accessibility needs this survey failed to accommodate, please do not hesitate to contact me at [log in to unmask]. I will be happy to help!
