Dear colleagues,

Journal of Critical Public Health open for submission

With usual apologies for cross posting, here is a brief update on the new Journal of Critical Public Health (JCPH).

As most of you are aware, JCPH was established by the Editorial Board members who resigned from the Taylor & Francis-owned Critical Public Health to ensure they could continue to nurture an academically rigorous space for critical scholarship, in line with the values and history of the wider community. JCPH is now fully open for submission. It is currently ‘diamond open access’ – there are no charges for submission, publication or accessing content.

JCPH is published on behalf of the Critical Public Health Network, and hosted at the University of Calgary, with Lindsay McLaren as Editor in Chief. More information on scope and submissions here: Journal of Critical Public Health (ucalgary.ca)<https://journalhosting.ucalgary.ca/index.php/jcph/>

There has been an outpouring of enthusiasm for the move, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with commercial academic publishing. We thank colleagues for their support to date, and for your questions on what you can do to help! We will be organising wider consultation on sustainable funding models, and what the community want from the new journal, in due course. In the meantime, you can:

• Submit your best work to JCPH if you are in a position to do so. As a new journal, it will take a while to build up an impact factor and visibility through abstracting services. We are aware that publishing in a ‘new’ journal may not be prudent for those early in a career, or in settings where journal metrics still matter for promotions and credibility.
• Bear with us as the team navigate the new systems for journal workflows with volunteer labour only.
• Do please review if asked and you are able to: we will need to build up our reviewer database from scratch again.
• Spread the word! Share this email, let your colleagues know about the new journal and the reasons for the move.

Any questions can be sent to the journal administrator, Rosa Hemmingway, at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Best wishes,
Cath Montgomery
