*The AAO’s Professional Development Committee presents*

*An Introduction to Managing Audio-Visual Collections*

This half-day workshop will provide a broad introductory overview of key
issues affecting audio-visual collections. From audio to film to video,
there is a huge spectrum of formats and issues to be aware of as an
archivist. We will discuss format identification, appraisal and assessment
of incoming AV donations, common preservation issues for a variety of
formats, digitization, digital file standards and metadata, and providing
access. The focus will be on physical records, with a brief discussion of
born-digital AV material. Please bring concerns that your archive is
working through, and we can explore those issues together.

Participants will learn:

· How context informs format identification

· Preservation techniques for a variety of formats

· When to consider in-house vs. outsourcing of AV digitization
