Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Experience (ED), with a dotted line to the Senior Executive Director, Student Mental Health, Systems, Policy and Strategy (Sr ED), the incumbent is accountable for the development, implementation and management of strategic services and supports designed to support faculty and staff who are working with students with significant and complex issues that impact their ability to succeed in university studies. The incumbent provides leadership, supervision, direction, and management to a team of professional staff specializing in supporting serious, challenging, and complex student issues. S/he/they will have primary accountability for the management of human resources, financial and unit organizational performance. This includes the development of new initiatives that will support organizational changes, policies and procedures and data and reporting. In the context of this leadership role, the Director, Student Progress & Intervention Support (Director) will assume a modified caseload and provide intervention and case management services.


Working closely with senior academic and administrative leadership from across the University, the Director ensures that the overall support provided to faculty and staff, and ultimately students, is well-coordinated, responsive to the community needs, and delivered in the most effective manner. The Director also plays a key role across the unit and at the wider institutional level, providing leadership in the interpretation and application of relevant University policies connected to students of concern. While primarily located on the St George campus, the Student Progress & Intervention Support Team collaborates and provides support at UTM and UTSC campuses as needed.


Within the framework of the University’s academic plans, the Director plays a pivotal role in promoting sharing and collaboration between divisions and in communicating progress in enhancing the student experience to the campus community, particularly to students. Additionally, the Director will work with the Sr ED to ensure alignment with the institutional student mental health strategy. The Director is a member of the senior leadership team in Student Life and the Tri Campus Mental Health Team and demonstrates a commitment to the University’s principles of equity and inclusion. The incumbent manages relationships with multiple internal stakeholders and external stakeholders, partners, and organizations.


As a leader and a mentor, the Director will work synergistically with staff and faculty throughout the University and manage a staff of high-caliber professionals and assume overall responsibility for human resources, labour relations and financial management including dispute resolution and compliance of collective agreements. The incumbent supervises and manages the staff and the quality and efficiency of work, ensuring the structure and duties are meeting operational objectives in the most effective way.


Essential Qualifications:

(MINIMUM)


EDUCATION:


Graduate Degree in education, nursing, clinical psychology, social work or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Member of a regulated health discipline or profession. Additional leadership training and education inclusive of human resources management, financial and data management, strategic planning are strongly recommended and considered an asset.


EXPERIENCE:


Minimum eight years or more of both direct service and leadership experience in a university educational environment with an emphasis on problem solving, case management, academic advising, crisis response, project and program development, design and implementation, and policy development and interpretation, specifically in the context of supporting students experiencing difficulty making progress in their academic programs.


Demonstrated skill in working with students whose issues intersect with university life and academic achievement.


Extensive knowledge of and experience with academic, support and university structures (how the university works), including a holistic understanding and approach in supporting students experiencing difficulty making progress in their academic programs.


Experience in supervising/managing a team and operational leadership that encompasses the administrative and managerial accountabilities of this role.


SKILLS:


Demonstrated understanding of the complex university environment where student situations may arise in the context of both academic and health related concerns. Knowledge of both the domestic and international context that is relevant to current University of Toronto context. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of mental health issues experienced by students in the context of an academic setting.


Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with professional staff in the University, to set-up networks of aid and response for students whose continual or recurring needs compromise their ability to fulfill the essential duties of being a student.


Demonstrated leadership experience managing financial and human resource accountabilities in a unionized context.


Experience utilizing a proactive approach to program implementation and complex problem solving.


Demonstrated ability in collaborating effectively with senior administrators, and a diverse group of colleagues and staff. Ability to communicate effectively with front-line staff as well as senior academic administrators about issues facing students with continual or recurring complex needs.


Knowledge of human development, mental health and evidence-based approaches to working with clients/students in a post-secondary context.


Ability to work across cultural and language differences. Fundamental understanding and commitment to promoting and sustaining the benefits of equity and diversity in higher education.


Excellent oral and written communication, leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to exercise patience, tact, judgment, and discretion. Demonstrated ability to relate to students in a way that builds trust and confidence. Ability to work in a highly diverse community with students from varied backgrounds and a variety of age groups, presenting a range of difficulties and personal issues. Ability to work as an effective adult-educator for the purpose of curriculum development, implementation, delivery and evaluation.


High degree of technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suit inclusive of Excel and other software applications necessary for administrative and leadership roles. Capacity to learn and acquire proficiency in additional software applications necessary for this role (Finance, HR etc).


OTHER:


Ability to establish collaborative relationships with supervisors and colleagues and negotiate to prioritize work, manage competing e demands in a dynamic work environment. Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, manage matters of extreme sensitivity and confidentiality. Demonstrated commitment to optimization of work efficiency and rationalization of procedures. Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed essential.


This leadership role requires on-site presence at the University with option for work from home when appropriate and to be negotiated with supervisors.
