Dear Mark Twain Forum Members, This is a friendly reminder that the application deadline for the 2024 Quarry Farm Fellowships is Thursday, November 30, 2023. The Center for Mark Twain Studies offers eleven residencies in 2024 at Quarry Farm to any scholar, writer, or artist working in the field of Mark Twain Studies at any career stage, giving fellows the opportunity to work on academic and creative projects at Quarry Farm. Reflecting the mission of the Center for Mark Twain Studies, as envisioned by the Langdon family at the time of gift to Elmira College in 1983, the Quarry Farm Fellowship Program fosters and supports scholarship and creative works related to Mark Twain, including, but not limited to, his literature, life, family, associations, influences, reception, and significance. The fellowship selection process aims to assist scholars, writers, and artists in producing works of highest distinction and cultivating a diverse community across backgrounds, specializations, and ranks. Mark Twain was interested in a myriad of different subjects. The Quarry Farm Fellowship Program reflects Twain's insatiable curiosity. Not only are scholars in the field of literature and history encouraged to apply, but applicants from any academic or creative field are eligible for fellowships. As one of the most important literary landmarks in American history, Quarry Farm is a cultural humanities site, a building whose sole purpose is to provide inspiration and resources to scholars, writers, and artists working in the field of Mark Twain Studies. Quarry Farm Fellows have access to twenty-first century workspaces, a nearly complete Mark Twain Studies reference collection on the premises, including the complete Oxford Mark Twain facsimile edition and Mark Twain Project publications as well as up-to-date secondary and reference works dedicated to Mark Twain Studies, while at the same time being surrounded by nineteenth century books, furniture, textiles, and painting, almost all of which were present during Twain’s time at Quarry Farm. Furthermore, Quarry Farm Fellows have access to one of the best collections of secondary scholarly material dedicated to Mark Twain Studies shelved on the premises. Eleven two-week Quarry Farm Fellowships will be offered in 2024, including housing at Quarry Farm and a $1000 honorarium. At least three fellowships will be reserved for graduate students, contingent faculty, independent scholars, and faculty three or fewer years removed from completion of their PhD. At least one fellowship will be reserved for creative writers. At least one fellowship will be reserved for creative visual artists.
