Good day,

The AAO contacted you in May regarding the potential dissolution of the Region of Peel Archives. Members of the AAO’s Communication and Advocacy Committee have been continuing their efforts for this cause - and now we are seeking your support in our letter writing campaign!

Click here to find <https://www.ola.org/en/members> out who your MPP is and their contact information.

We feel it is important to write to our individual MPP’s constituency offices to put this issue on their radar. The following are things you can include in your letter to your MPP:

*	Dissolving an Archival Institution that has been amalgamated since 1978 sets a dangerous precedent.
*	Dissolving an Archival Institution will result in the loss of a centralized place that establishes the historical connection between all cities and municipalities that make up Peel Region <https://peelarchivesblog.com/2023/05/15/peels-shared-archival-legacy> .
*	Dissolving an Archival Institution could create confusion for researchers who may not know where to go to seek information.
*	Duplication of services creates excess waste and undue costs.

We encourage you to speak from your heart and list the reasons why this issue is important to you. If you’d like some help with what to say, here are some facts about the Region of Peel Archives that you can use to support your concern:

The Region of Peel Archives is the official archival repository of the Region of Peel and its constituent municipalities of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. The Archives collects government records to support the municipalities’ obligation to preserve and provide access to government records as per the Municipal Act, 2001 and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. In addition to government records, the Archives collects significant non-government records, including those of organizations, groups, and private citizens that document the history and development of the area and its people. The records serve as the collective memory of the area, providing accountability and transparency, and fostering an understanding of the Region’s place within Ontario.

A diverse group of people use the archival services, including municipal staff who access the records to inform decisions on planning, policy, legal matters, and other governmental concerns; as well as students, historians, genealogists, journalists, property owners, and other private citizens. In 2022, the Region of Peel Archives received and responded to over 1500 requests to access the rich and diverse records <https://www.archeion.ca/region-of-peel-archives> in its care. The Archives also maintains and provides access to its online records for the tens of thousands of online visitors per year.

When writing your MPP be sure to write to the address for the Constituency office and include your own address at the bottom. MPPs are obligated to respond to letters from their constituents.

A huge thank you to Mary Grace Kosta for bringing this feedback form <https://www.ontario.ca/page/peel-region-transition-board#section-3> to everyone’s attention. This is a great place to tell the province and the stakeholders how you feel about potential changes to the Peel Region Archives. However, we urge you to also write your MPPs because they are legally obligated to respond to their constituents.

Thank you in advance for your help on this important issue!
