Presenter: Laurel Schwartz, Archivist, Jewish Historical Society of San Diego

In 1994 Laurel, husband Stan Schwartz & Rabbi William Kramer edited a book of articles entitled, Old Town, New Town, An Enjoyment of San Diego Jewish History.

Five years later the Schwartzes founded the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego Archives, at Love Library, San Diego State University in conjunction with the Director of Jewish Studies Program, Dr. Laurence Baron and Special Collections. Since that time as curator, Laurel has worked to grow the archives into an indispensable resource for people researching the history of Jews in the region as well as providing insight into many aspects of local interest.

She was co-author of the entry on San Diego for the 2007 Encyclopedia Judaica.  In 2005 Laurel directed the creation of a permanent historical exhibit at Congregation Beth Israel, the oldest congregation in Southern California, called Beth Israel in Three Centuries.  As archives curator she provided expertise and selected materials for the 2017-2018 exhibit at the San Diego History Center, Celebrate San Diego! The History and Heritage of San Diego's Jewish Community. She also wrote an article, with research assistance from Stan, entitled San Diego Jews, World War I and the Growth of Benevolence which appeared in the Spring/Summer 2018 Issue of Western States Jewish History.

She has spoken widely in the San Diego Community and at academic conferences and she is the editor of the Society's newsletter, Toldot (Generations) San Diego.
