The Society of American Archivists - Archivists of Religious Collections Section invites you to register for the upcoming Lunch and Learn: Discovering Enslavement Histories in Catholic Church Records

Feb 29, 2024 03:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

For the past decade, diocesan and religious order archivists have dialogued about ways to open records of enslaved African and Native American persons. These records come in a variety of different forms: sacramental registers, correspondence, financial ledgers, contracts, diaries, and journals. Sacramental records, for example, hold a wealth of information about enslaved persons including baptism, communion, confirmation, marriage, and burial. During the past year, a group of interested parties including members from dioceses and religious orders have formed a working group, Catholic Religious Organizations Studying Slavery (CROSS) to explore ways of promoting open access to these important records. This presentation will discuss the mission of CROSS and the numerous records of enslaved persons found in Catholic organizations.
