In his book "Mark Twain and John Bull," Howard Baetzhold contends that while writing "A Connecticut Yankee..." Twain became very interested in Britain's Liberal Party and the things it stood for. In fact, Baetzhold argues that Twain so strongly agreed with some of the party's doctrines that it influenced the shape of "Connecticut Yankee," and that the novel became in part a condemnation of the British aristocracy. Does anyone know of -- or have ideas about -- other sources of information that suggest or document Twain's interest in British politics during this period (late 1880s)? Do you perhaps recall reading any Twain correspondences that mention such an interest? Thank you so much -- Jennifer Halperin
