Jim Zwick (Syracuse University) <[log in to unmask]> has kindly made available to Mark Twain Forum subscribers a copy of his paper, "Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, and the Anti-Imperialist League, 1899-1920." This paper was presented at the 1994 Maxwell Colloquium at Syracuse University, October 28, 1994. It is a substantially revised version of a paper with the same title presented at the 1993 conference on "The State of Mark Twain Studies" at Elmira College. It will be published in January or February 1995 in _Proceedings of the 1994 Maxwell Colloquium_ (Syracuse: Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, 1995). The abstract follows: Mark Twain and William Dean Howells were vice presidents of the Anti-Imperialist League (1898-1921), the organized opposition to the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) and United States imperialism. Biographical studies focused on their writings from 1898 to 1902 have highlighted their mutual opposition to war and imperialism after 1900, but their agreement on the issues was not always complete. Differences in their attitudes about war and imperialism gained practical import as the anti-imperialist movement declined in influence, leading them to take opposite sides during the 1904-1905 split within the League. New information about their direct involvements with the anti-imperialist organizations highlights these differences and illuminates some of the issues that divided the anti-imperialist movement during its later years.
