Though the dating of Huck Finn in the 1840s is certainly correct, it is arguable that, in Twain's mind, at least, a large portion of the novel is actually about the Mississippi valley in the post-reconstruction period, ie. the late 1870s and early 1880s. Bob Comeau Drew Uinversity
