It may be that I am somewhat overstating Dolmetsch's claim. I'm writing from my home computer, not my office, where my copy of his book is. Nevertheless, I recall that Dolmetsch makes a stronger assertion about Clemens's fluency in German than I have seen elsewhere. Dolmetsch read Viennese newspaper archives and other German-language accounts of the Clemens family's nearly two years in Vienna, and has indeed used material previously unseen by English-language scholars.
