I recall reading on the liner notes for the Mark Twain Tonight LP that Hal Holbrook used both rare film footage to study his manner and gramophone recordings to study his voice. They exist somewhere. On the subject of locating the recordings, may I suggest two very large sound recording archives: The New York Public Library and the Library of Congress? The Smithsonian might have them in their collection as well.
