I'm in the midst of teaching _Huck Finn_, and one of my students asked about the appearance of the inside of the house that floats down the river (where Jim discovers pap) in ch. IX. Specifically, the student asked, and I couldn't explain, about the "couple of masks made out of black cloth" (p. 71 in the 1995 Graff and Phelan edition we're using). Can anyone help? Was the house the hideout for some criminals, or is there more than meets my eye here? Thanks. Frank McGill University of Colorado
