"From Nutrition Science to Nutrition Practice for Better Global Health" will be the theme of the event, which attracts several thousand nutrition scientists, practitioners, and educators from around the world every four years. The goal of the program is to explore the cutting edge of research in nutrition sciences and the relevance of this information in setting nutrition policy, providing the consumer with quality food products, and making recommendations for nutrition practices that will optimize health through the prevention and treatment of disease. Major themes will include new methodologies in nutrition sciences from genetic engineering to application of stable isotopic tracer techniques. Topics related to basic nutritional physiology and biochemistry will be explored in relation to the needs of specific groups such as infants, women, elite athletes, the aged, indigenous peoples and health issues in emerging nations. Current dietary prevention/treatment strategies in cancer, AIDS, severe malnutrition, and atherosclerosis will be explored. The 16th International Congress is being sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences, the Canadian Dietetic Association, Agricultural Institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology. As a mean of rationalisation and integration the South Pacific Commission has decided to amalgamate the position of Nutritionist and Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiologist. The position will involve the development of integrated programmes in community health nutrition with the view of improving nutritional status of Pacific islanders and to control and prevent non-communicable diseases in the region. Qualifications and Experience: A higher degree (preferably at a doctoral level) in public health nutrition and epidemiology is essential; Applicants should also have a minimum of 3 years working experience in a developing country or similar environment (candidates with experience in the Pacific will be an advantage).
